The Little History of Blush

Blush or blusher, does not date from yesterday but from Antiquity! Even then, different substances were used to give a soft pink color to the cheeks... In ancient Egypt, women ground minerals such as malachite and red ochre to create pigments that they then applied to their cheeks. The Greeks and Romans also used natural dyes based on plants, flowers and berries to add dimension to the complexion. It was in the Middle Ages and its dark period (too dark), that the use of blush became less and less popular. At that time, light and pale skin was considered a sign of high social status and the wearing of colors was not appreciated... During the Renaissance, the ideal of beauty changed once again and women began to introduce makeup into their daily lives. They used mixtures of natural substances such as dried flowers, rose water and berry pulp for their cheeks.

In the 19th century, it was associated with light women before becoming a makeup essential. Women of the time used lipstick to pigment their cheeks. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that blush as we know it today materialized. The first commercial blushes were created and contained colored powders specially formulated for the tender and fragile skin of the face. Today, blush is found in different forms: powder, cream, liquid blush, stick and even gel. It is made from various ingredients, such as mineral pigments, synthetic dyes and binding agents and its formulas adapt to different skin types (oily skin, combination skin, dry skin, etc.).

The different steps to choosing your blush

There are as many blushes as there are cheeks on this planet (or almost...), since it is the final touch of a successful makeup, it is important to apply your blush properly but also to choose it carefully. To do this, different points must be taken into account.

Choosing your blush according to your skin type

Dry skin and mature skin can claim the same type of blush since their skins have the same similarities. In these cases, it is best to opt for a cream, liquid or gel blush. These hydrating formulas will add luminosity to the skin and prevent it from appearing dull. Be careful, avoid powder blushes, they can accentuate dry areas, settle into fine lines and age the skin further.

Oily and combination skin prefer powder blushes because they have a light and matte texture that avoids the highlighting brought by excess sebum. If you have oily or combination skin, make sure to choose oil-free and long-lasting formulas to prevent the blush from dissolving quickly. Avoid creamy blushes that can make the skin even more oily... In some cases and if they have an appropriate formulation, liquid blushes can do the trick

Sensitive skin, on the other hand, will especially pay attention to the formulation. Whether it's a liquid blush, a cream blush or a powder blush, if you have sensitive skin, you will have to make sure to choose a hypoallergenic and fragrance-free blush in order to minimize skin irritation. For example, mineral blushes are a good option because they are gentler on the skin and less likely to cause allergic reactions.

What color blush for what skin color?

Blush means color, and color means complexion! To choose the ideal blush color, you absolutely have to rely on your skin color. Here are some tips for finding the blush that will hit the mark every time!

  1. Fair skin: For fair skin, blush shades of pale pink, light peach or light coral can be flattering. Avoid colors that are too bright or too dark, which can look artificial on skin that is too fair. It is always best to opt for subtle tones that add a touch of natural color to the cheeks...

  2. Medium to Olive Skin: For dark skin (under olive or yellow undertones), blushes in warm tones like coral, peach, and bronze are generally very flattering. Medium pink or earthy pink shades (e.g. rosewood) like can work well. Skip any shades that are too light as they may not stand out enough on the skin.

  3. Dark skin: For dark skin, blushes with rich and intense tones are magnificent. Shades of berry, plum, deep bronze or terracotta undeniably enhance the skin. Brighter shades like fuchsia and dark coral can also be superb. Of course, we avoid shades that are too light, which can leave an ashy appearance on the skin.

  4. Very dark skin: for very dark skin, nothing beats a blush with deep and rich tones such as plum, burgundy, chocolate, grape, shades of dark red or brick are also flattering. We leave out the rest of the shades that are too light which risk not standing out enough on your skin.

Good tip: if the texture of your lipstick allows it, you can definitely use it on your cheeks as a blush. This two-in-one aspect is also increasingly popular with cosmetic brands.
