What to (absolutely) avoid after a hyaluronic acid injection

What to (absolutely) avoid after a hyaluronic acid injection

Coralie Techer

Hyaluronic acid injection is a non-invasive procedure that is quite common. It is becoming increasingly popular, but we would like to remind you of what you mustn't do after the procedure, in order to maintain the results for as long as possible.

Given that an injection of hyaluronic acid (in the lips or elsewhere on the face) is a painless and rapid operation (between 10 and 20 minutes per session), it's easy to think of returning to a completely normal life, without taking the slightest precaution. Wrong! As with any physical intervention (no matter how small), hyaluronic acid injection, which modifies appearance and injects a foreign body into the body, requires precautions to be taken afterwards. There are a number of points to bear in mind, not only to avoid side effects but also to maintain the results of the session as far as possible and not ruin the doctor's work.

Les choses à éviter après une injection d' acide hyaluronique

Hyaluronic acid injection is an aesthetic medicine procedure that involves injecting hyaluronic acid into one or more targeted areas to restore contour and fill in sagging. This technique, performed by an aesthetic surgeon, is widely used to fill in dark circles, reshape the oval of the face or increase volume through lip injections , for example. As the injection session is relatively quick and not very stressful, the operation does not entail any social eviction, and allows you to return (almost) to normal when you leave the surgery! However, care must be taken in the days following the operation, to avoid ruining the result or suffering side-effects...

Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun

In the hours or days following injections of this dermal filler, slight swelling or redness may appear around the treated area. These marks never last long, and fade after a maximum of one week. To ensure that they do not last or leave unwanted marks over time, we recommend avoiding exposure to the sun for 48 hours, until they disappear! It's important to remember that a hematoma or any spot exposed to UV rays (natural or artificial) takes much longer to disappear, and can even leave an indelible trace. Not to mention that UV rays can also significantly reduce the effect of hyaluronic acid...

Avoid intense or prolonged exertion

After a hyaluronic acid injection, you are strongly advised to rest, or at the very least, avoid intense or prolonged exertion which could increase body heat and thus totally impair the result of the operation! The rest period allows the hyaluronic acid to spread properly under the epidermis in the injected area. After 48 hours, you can return to your normal routine.

Avoid zone massages, saunas and steam rooms.

As with exercise, massage should be avoided for 48 hours. Under the effect of massage, the hyaluronic acid could have difficulty in spreading properly to offer an even result! Sauna and hammam are also to be avoided, as they represent too great a source of heat for the body and could cause the acid to harden beneath the dermis.

Avoid relieving any inflammation with ice or anti-inflammatories.

After an acid injection in the lips, you may feel the discomfort of inflammation or a slight tingling that persists for the first few hours. This is perfectly normal! However, you should avoid remedying this with ice or anti-inflammatories. As recommended by doctors, it's best to apply a compress soaked in cool water every hour to prevent swelling and soothe any tingling.

What happens if I don't follow the doctor's instructions after the injections?

The advice given above is also what your doctor will generally prescribe. These are essential steps to follow to avoid completely undermining the proper functioning of the acid injections. Indeed, if the recommendations are not followed, there's a good chance that the acid won't spread properly under the dermis, leaving a poorer result. In extreme cases, the acid may also harden and settle incorrectly, resulting in unsightly swelling. After 48 hours, if no suspicious symptoms have appeared, you can return to your normal life and apply your usual skincare products, such as lip balm or eyelash serum
