How much does Brazilian straightening cost? Everything you need to know before trying it out

How much does Brazilian straightening cost? Everything you need to know before trying it out

Coralie Techer

It's the solution when you're looking to soften and straighten your hair. Brazilian straightening has been a salon hit for years now. How much does it cost and exactly how does it work? We tell you all about it.

For those who have curly or frizzy hair by nature, it can happen that a desire for straightening creeps in. Of course, it's always preferable to pamper your hair rather than force it to change, BUT you're also entitled to want to change your look from time to time! And if you're wondering how to get straight hair without damaging it ? Fortunately, there are a number of salon methods available, each more gentle and sophisticated than the last, so as not to ruin the hair's natural texture. For some years now, Brazilian straightening has been top of the list of straightening techniques. Reputed to be gentle and non-aggressive on the hair, it is still very popular with customers in 2023.

What is Brazilian straightening?

Brazilian straightening is a hair treatment originally developed in Brazil to reduce frizz and soften hair. It is a deep, chemical treatment that uses a solution based on keratin, a protein naturally present in hair, to smooth and nourish hair deep down.

What type of hair is suitable for Brazilian straightening?

That's the advantage of this treatment: Brazilian straightening can be applied to all hair types. On short or long hair, whether frizzy, wavy, curly or even straight with frizz. It's important to note, however, that the final result may vary according to hair texture and condition. For example, thick, curly and frizzy hair particularly benefits from Brazilian straightening as it helps smooth and reduce frizz, while making hair softer and more manageable. For straight and fine hair, smoothing is useful as a softening treatment, to reduce the appearance of any frizz and improve shine while making hair supple. But of course, that's where its effect ends.

However, it's important to note that Brazilian straightening may not be suitable for all hair types! In particular, you need to be careful if your hair is color-treated, damaged or chemically treated... We recommend consulting a professional to determine whether Brazilian straightening is suitable for your hair type and, above all, its condition.

How does Brazilian straightening work?

It all depends on the technique and products used by the hairdresser. But in general, here are the steps your hair will go through:

  1. Hair preparation: hair is washed with a clarifying shampoo to remove residues of hair products and impurities. The hair is then towel-dried.

  2. Product application: the hairdresser applies the Brazilian smoothing product strand by strand to the hair. The product contains ingredients such as keratin, which help soften and smooth hair.

  3. Application time: the product is left on the hair for a certain amount of time, generally between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the type of treatment and hair texture.

  4. Drying: the hair is dried using a hair dryer and brush to smooth and style it.

  5. Straightening: hair is straightened using a high-temperature straightening iron to seal the product into the hair and achieve a smooth, shiny result.

  6. Rinsing: after straightening, hair is rinsed with warm water to remove any excess product.

  7. Finishing treatment application: a finishing treatment is applied to the hair to help maintain the smoothing effect and to nourish the hair.

Finally, the hair is dried and styled as usual. It's important to follow the hairdresser's instructions for hair care and maintenance at home after Brazilian straightening, to prolong results and preserve natural hair. Avoid paraben- and silicone-based products (among others). Give preference to natural formulas and don't hesitate to take care of your scalp (with a hair serum for example) to promote beautiful regrowth and take full advantage of the effects of the Brazilian straightening treatment.

How much does Brazilian straightening cost?

That's the big question, of course, before taking the plunge. When it first became available in Europe, Brazilian straightening seemed out of reach for many people. But as a novelty, it had its golden hour! Nowadays, you can expect to find salons that charge rather affordable rates, but you should be aware that it's still a rather time-consuming treatment for hairdressers. It takes time, but it also requires specific equipment (products, accessories...), which inevitably has an impact on costs.

The average cost of Brazilian straightening in a salon in France is between €150 and €400, whereas Japanese straightening costs between €150 and €500. This cost is influenced by a number of factors, including hair length, hair condition, type of treatment and the hairdresser's level of experience. As far as the type of treatment is concerned, Brazilian straightening is much more effective on curly to frizzy hair than on frizzy hair. So keep this in mind before choosing this type of straightening and spending your money.

It is therefore advisable to consult several hair salons and ask for detailed quotes before making a decision. It's also important to check the salon's reputation and make sure the treatment is carried out by a qualified professional to avoid the risk of hair damage. That would be a shame.

Les avantages et les inconvénients du lissage brésilien

Although it's a popular technique that's appreciated the world over, Brazilian straightening has many advantages, but also a few disadvantages that are worth remembering:

The benefits :

Cheveux plus lisses : Le lissage brésilien réduit les frisottis et assouplit les cheveux, ce qui les rend plus lisses et plus faciles à coiffer.

Reduced styling time: After a Brazilian straightening treatment, it is faster and easier to style your hair on a daily basis because it is more manageable.

Natural Look: Unlike other straightening treatments, Brazilian straightening does not make hair look too stiff or artificial. It generally retains some natural texture.

Hair Repair: Brazilian hair straightening often contains nourishing ingredients that can help repair damaged hair and improve its overall health.

Durability: Brazilian straightening results generally last several weeks to a few months, depending on washing frequency and hair care.

Disadvantages:

Cost: Brazilian straightening can be relatively expensive, especially if done in a hair salon.

Chemicals: Most Brazilian straighteners contain chemicals, such as formaldehyde, which can be irritating to the skin and eyes. It's important to perform the treatment in a well-ventilated area, and to take appropriate precautions.

Perte de volume : Brazilian straightening can reduce the hair's natural volume, which can be a disadvantage if you prefer fuller hair.

Répétition nécessaire : Results are not permanent and gradually fade as you wash your hair. You will need to repeat the treatment regularly to maintain the effect.
