What can I do about split nails?

What can I do about split nails?

Coralie Techer

A nail that splits can be a real nuisance, especially when you insist on a perfect manicure. What can you do when you're faced with this problem? Here's our advice.

Split nails can be a source of frustration for those seeking to maintain strong, aesthetically pleasing nails. If you're facing this problem, don't worry, because there are simple solutions and practices to restore the health of your nails.

Why do nails split?

Several factors can contribute to nail splitting. Firstly, lack of moisture is a common cause. Dehydrated nails become fragile and prone to splitting. It is therefore essential to maintain adequate hydration by regularly applying a cream specially designed for hands and nails.

Excessive use of chemicals can weaken nail structure. Some nail polishes, removers and cleaning products contain aggressive substances that can contribute to splitting. We recommend limiting the use of these products or wearing protective gloves when necessary.

Poor manicure habits can also play a role in nail splitting. Frequent use of false nails, aggressive polish application, or abrupt nail polish removal can damage nail surfaces, making them more vulnerable to splitting.

In addition, a lack of certain essential nutrients may be an underlying cause. Deficiencies in vitamins such as biotin, vitamin E and iron can contribute to split nails. So it's crucial to maintain a balanced diet to promote healthy nails from the inside out.

Finally, frequent exposure to water, especially hot water, can weaken nails. Avoiding prolonged bathing and wearing gloves during household chores involving excessive exposure to water are important preventive measures to prevent nail splitting.

Solutions to prevent split nails

Fortunately, there's always (or almost always) a solution to every problem. Fingernail splitting is far from inevitable, and there are many ways to alleviate the problem and restore healthy hands right down to the fingertips.

  1. Regular moisturizing: One of the simplest and most effective solutions for maintaining healthy nails is regular moisturizing. Apply a moisturizing cream specially formulated for hands and nails at least twice a day. Ingredients such as vitamin E and nourishing oils can penetrate nails, strengthening them from within. No more brittle nails.

  2. Cut with care: Use clean, sharp nail clippers to avoid crushing nails. Cut straight across and avoid trimming too much on the sides. This practice helps prevent splitting by maintaining a clean, neat cut. After each manicure, you can also apply a nail care product dedicated to nail regrowth, or sweet almond oil to nourish the cuticles.

  3. Limiting chemicals: Choose nail polishes and removers that are free from harsh chemicals. Opt for gentle formulations that preserve the health of your nails. If you use chemicals frequently, be sure to wear protective gloves to minimize direct exposure.

  4. Balanced diet: Maintain a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients. Foods containing biotin, vitamin E, iron and other minerals contribute to the overall health of your nails. Include eggs, nuts, green vegetables and fruit in your diet. You can also incorporate dietary supplements dedicated to nail strength and regrowth, but first check that they are compatible with your health.

  5. Using nail hardeners: Nail hardeners are products specially designed to strengthen nail structure. Apply them according to the product instructions to reap their benefits. However, don't overuse them to avoid any adverse effects.

  6. Protection from water: When performing activities involving frequent exposure to water, such as household chores, wear protective gloves. This will reduce the negative impact of both water and household products on nail structure, keeping them from splitting.

  7. Consult a professional: If, despite your best efforts, the splitting persists, it may be wise to consult a nail health professional. A dermatologist or nail stylist can provide personalized advice and treatments tailored to your specific situation.

By adopting these solutions into your nail care routine, you'll promote healthy growth and an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Remember, consistency is key, and with a little regular attention, you can restore the health of your nails and keep them strong and resilient.
