What is slugging? The beauty trend that's taking social networks by storm

Coralie Techer

For once, it's the networks that have brought us the latest beauty trend: slugging, which promises moisturized skin and a crazy glow. But is it really worth adopting? We take a look.

Tiktok and Instagram are two social networks renowned for their ability to make beauty trends appear and spread. From the most useful to the most zany, it's important to know where to draw the line before embarking on the trends of the moment. In recent months, slugging has been taken up by many a beauty addict, extolling its virtues. But what is it really?

Slugging: back to basics

The "slugging" trend is a skincare method that involves applying a layer of Vaseline or petroleum jelly to the face before bedtime to create a protective barrier and allow skincare products to penetrate the skin effectively. This new beauty tip is inspired by the Korean practice of "jamsu", which involves immersing the face in cold water to set make-up. The term "slugging" comes from the English "slug". It refers to the shiny, viscous appearance of the skin after the application of Vaseline.

The slugging method is said to deeply moisturize the skin, strengthen the cutaneous barrier and help prevent dehydration. It is particularly suitable for dry or dehydrated skin, but can also be beneficial for other skin types.

Good or bad?

The idea behind slugging is to deeply moisturize dry skin, making it a good technique. In actual fact, Vaseline remains rather controversial when it comes to its use on the face, as it can be highly comedogenic. On the other hand, Vaseline (despite being made from petroleum) has a strong regenerative capacity for the skin. It is recommended for soothing and comforting the skin after a slight burn, or for healing permanent eyebrow make-up (microblading), which is an invasive procedure on the skin. Applied to the lips, it works miracles to reduce chapping, on the décolleté it prevents skin sagging, and in winter there's nothing like it on the skin of the body to prevent dryness.

But it's important to note that the slugging method may not be suitable for everyone. People with acne-prone skin or various imperfections should absolutely avoidusing Vaseline on their face, as it can clog pores and aggravate skin problems. What's more, it's advisable not to use the slugging method every night to avoid excessive product build-up on the skin!

How do I apply slugging?

When you decide to apply slugging to your face, here are eight steps to follow:

  1. Cleanse and dry face thoroughly to remove impurities and natural oils.
  2. Apply a face serum, a dark circle serum and a light moisturizing cream to maximize the hydrating effect.
  3. Apply a small amount of pharmaceutical-grade Vaseline or petroleum jelly with your fingers or a clean spatula.
  4. Spread the product evenly over the entire face, avoiding the eye area. Make sure the layer is thick enough to cover the skin completely.
  5. Gently massage the skin to help the product penetrate.
  6. Leave Vaseline or petroleum jelly on face overnight.
  7. In the morning, cleanse the face with a mild cleanser to remove any remaining Vaseline or petroleum jelly.
  8. Apply a light moisturizing cream to protect the skin throughout the day.
