How to reduce dark circles?
Coralie Techer
A sign of fatigue or poor lifestyle, dark circles can also be a genetic factor! How to remove or fade them when this is not possible? We tell you everything.
To be able to remove or fade them, you must first understand what dark circles are. Dark circles are a cluster of blood vessels that become visible due to poor circulation when everything is not going well in the body, when the skin becomes thinner or when genetic conditions favor it. Benign, they are however an aesthetic hindrance for many...
According to the general idea, dark circles appear under the eyes when the body is deficient in oxygen or lacks hydration. BUT, we must look further, other factors can be at the origin of the appearance of dark circles. For example, some people can have an impeccable lifestyle and still develop dark circles under the eyes. The genetic factor then comes into play. People with dark or mixed skin can have hyperpigmentation in the area and therefore develop permanent dark circles.

The different factors that can cause dark circles:
- Lack of sleep
- The disease
- Old age
- Genetics
- Depigmentation
- Consumption of alcohol or tobacco
What are the different types of dark circles?
There are several types of dark circles, to be able to tame them it is better (first of all) to understand your own type:
Pigmented dark circles
In this category, there are two subcategories: brown circles or blue circles that appear around the eyes. Here too there is a difference.
If your dark circles are brown: it is because the skin under your eyes is particularly thin (more than average) and shows melanin spots under the skin. Brown dark circles or dark circles, concern more people with dark skin but especially people who have genetic predispositions (heredity).
If your dark circles are blue: Like brown circles, blue circles appear in people whose skin under the eyes is extremely thin. Blue circles are caused by the appearance of veins and arteries that form the cluster of blood vessels present under the eyes. They become visible when the hours of sleep are not sufficient and fatigue sets in.
Hollow circles
The type of hollow dark circles are caused by sagging skin. The skin under the eyes is extremely thin and fragile (the most fragile on the body, in fact), it is the first area to suffer the effects of time. When you are young, the area is naturally filled with fat and has a nice full appearance! Obviously, if the hollow has always been there, it is because it is a genetic factor and in general there is no other solution than to turn to aesthetic medicine to get rid of it...

Full or rounded dark circles
Unlike hollow dark circles, full dark circles or bags under the eyes are the result of too much fat under the eyes... They can appear relatively early (from the age of 30) and can be reduced by a healthy lifestyle and a readjustment of your dietary balance (less sugar and fat).
Tips to avoid dark circles
As explained above, there are different types of dark circles. Of course, there are also different ways to avoid them, fade them or even remove them!
If you have no genetic predisposition to the appearance of dark circles, having a healthy lifestyle should be enough to fade them or even avoid them altogether. A healthy lifestyle includes quality sleep. For example, avoid sleepless nights, make sure you get enough sleep (the general quota is 8 hours but it varies from person to person). Focus on a balanced diet without excess, avoid addictions as much as possible, tobacco and alcohol are your worst enemies... among others!
A good make-up remover
This is the most basic step and yet it is the one that is most often skipped... Makeup removal is essential to keep beautiful skin! It should not be neglected and especially when it comes to eye makeup removal (especially when you have taken the time to do crazy makeup for doe eyes ).
This one is more meticulous and requires attention because the eye area is fragile. We must avoid using aggressive products but also rubbing to remove excess makeup. Eye makeup is removed with an oil or an oil-based makeup remover, preferably. The oil is gentle and natural, it effectively removes all makeup residue but also dust and pollution accumulated throughout the day. The advantage of oil is that it is applied with the finger and does not require the use of a cotton pad or reusable wipe. This avoids rubbing fabrics (very bad for the skin) and allows for even more precise makeup removal.

Massage the eye area
Nothing beats a good massage to get things back on track. It already works wonders on the whole body, so why not the eye area? Obviously, the massage around the eyes should be gentle and light. The pressure should not be as pronounced as on the rest of the body!
How to do it? Several times a day, do not hesitate to lightly tap the area around the eyes with your fingertips, this allows blood circulation to be reactivated and prevents the stagnation of fatty deposits.
Facial yoga or facial gymnastics are also an excellent help to reduce or remove dark circles. These two practices consist of a series of massages (with fingers or using tools such as stone rollers or Mushrooms) and facial muscle exercises to lift tissues, disperse fat and restore radiance to the most delicate areas of the face. Many tutorials are available on Youtube.

Hydration
ESSENTIAL, hydration is the key word in beauty. For beautiful skin, a pretty complexion but above all a body that functions optimally, we focus everything on hydration! Drinking water (pure water, herbal teas, tea, detox water) is very important to avoid or make dark circles disappear. During the day, we try to drink enough (1.5 liters minimum) to help the lymphatic system drain toxins properly and prevent them from accumulating around the dark circles! Good hydration is the assurance of avoiding bags for example.
In addition to this internal hydration, apply care with moisturizing properties, such as a cream or serum (like our ROSELIFT treatment) around the eyes. So that the product penetrates the skin properly, do not hesitate to apply it with small circular massage movements (light) or by tapping. The care is done morning and evening!

Bet on the cold
Cold is an excellent ally for decongesting but also for restoring color to depigmented areas. A cold spoon (left overnight in the refrigerator for example) is therefore particularly useful for reducing puffiness that appears when you wake up, it can also reduce the appearance of permanent puffiness but be careful, these cannot be removed like that. Several brands also offer roll-ons integrated into their treatment, the ball (usually metal) distributes the treatment around the eye while providing freshness.
The homemade recipe to treat dark circles
If you are the DIY (do it yourself) type then a homemade recipe may be the right solution:
- Applying a slice of fresh cucumber to decongest bags.
- Coffee grounds placed as a mask under the eyes to reactivate blood circulation and pigmentation.
- Cornflower water, applied with a cotton pad under the eyes at the level of dark circles and bags, will decongest and refresh the area.
- A tea bag (organic, black or green) placed under the eyes can also help eliminate dark circles! Theine is an excellent antioxidant that stimulates blood circulation while the tannin it contains decongests.
Surgical methods
For dark circles caused by genetics, there are unfortunately few tips that are truly effective... We must go further and move towards aesthetic medicine to hope for convincing results.
Hyaluronic acid injections
This is an excellent way to fill in hollow dark circles. Hyaluronic acid is an acid naturally present in the body, it is known for its ultra-hydrating and plumping effect, it is one of the preferred techniques to restore curve and roundness to faces that lose density over time. Hyaluronic acid injections are an excellent way to fill in the hollows caused by dark circles. Be careful, they are done in specialized offices. It is very important to be careful about the choice of your practitioner. There are standards to respect for this type of intervention, the specialist must be approved.
Malar lift
This is a slightly more invasive technique that will act on the entire dark circle area since it will lift the cheekbones to treat the dark circles. This is the most radical way to treat hollow and full dark circles!
