How to choose your highlighter?

How to choose your highlighter?

Coralie Techer

To illuminate the complexion and give yourself a healthy glow, nothing beats a highlighter. But how do you choose the right one? We give you the keys to finding the right one for you.

A few years ago, a miracle product entered the world of beauty: the highlighter. Highly acclaimed by make-up artists, it quickly became a must-have in our make-up kits. But why is the highlighter such a success? With the advent of "natural" make-up, a luminous complexion and a touch of radiance have become the norm for a flawless complexion. Highlighters are the ideal product for that shiny, glowy (but natural) result we love so much.

What are the different types of highlighter?

Initially known as a powder, the highlighter soon evolved to take on other forms, each more practical than the last.

Powder highlighter

This is the basic form, the one you're likely to find most easily on beauty shelves. Highlight powder, as it's also known, nestles in a compact poudrier or comes in bead form, and is applied with a dedicated fan brush. It's now available in a range of shades (from champagne to gold, copper, pink and even bluish or violet) to perfectly match all skin tones and have fun with the look. The advantage of powder is that it can be modulated, and you can easily play with intensity for a more or less glowy look.

Cream highlighter

The creamy version is ideal for those who like to play with textures. It's best smoothed on with the fingers to stretch the material. Because it blends perfectly into the skin, creamy highlighter is much more natural-looking than powder, making it ideal for everyday make-up. In fact, a little touch of highlighter is all you need to brighten up your face, without having to go through the make-up process!

Liquid or fluid highlighter

Liquid or fluid highlighter can also be translated as a shimmer serum. It is generally used as a skincare product and as a base before applying make-up. Riddled with pearlescent or shimmering pigments, fluid highlighter can be applied like an iridescent veil over the entire face, just before foundation and concealer. It can also be applied on its own, as it has the advantage of slightly blurring imperfections for a fresh complexion in no time.

Stick highlighter

The highlighter stick has been on the scene for some time now. Like blushes, they come in a small, knurled tube and can be applied directly to the skin. This format makes it easy to carry around for unexpected touch-ups. It blends easily with a brush for a more or less pronounced look.

How to choose your highlighter shade?

When it comes to make-up, one of the most important points to take into account to avoid a faux pas is your skin tone. Whether it's blush, foundation, concealer or highlighter, it's best to know your skin tone so you can choose the perfect match. Highlighters come in a variety of colors. Its shades adapt to the many different skin tones.

Understanding your skin color

It's important to understand your skin tone to choose the right shade of highlighter. If the skin is rather pale, a champagne, silver or rosy hue will suit perfectly. If skin is darker, a warm, golden, copper or orange hue may be a better match.

Thinking about the skin's undertone

To choose the perfect highlighter, it's also essential to consider the skin's undertone. If the undertone is warm (golden, olive), a golden or coppery shade will work best, even for fair skin. If the undertone is cool (blue, violet), a champagne or pale pink shade may work better.

Should you choose your highlighter according to your skin type?

As with everything else you apply to your skin (including skincare products such as day cream, eye serum and sunscreen), it's best to choose your highlighter according to your skin type. Different skin types have specific needs, and choosing the wrong make-up product can offer average results or even aggravate existing skin problems.

When you have dry skin: dry skin likes creamy or liquid textures. These moisturizing formulas often contain active skincare ingredients and give the skin a natural glow, avoiding a dry or porous appearance. Avoid powder highlighters, which can accentuate dry patches and make your skin look dull.

Oily skin: if your skin is oily, it's best to use a powder or gel-based highlighter. These textures are lighter and less likely to contribute to sebum production, which, as we know, can lead to oilier skin. In this case, avoid creamy highlighters, which can make skin look greasy.

Combination skin: if you have combination skin, you can opt for a powder, liquid or stick highlighter. But avoid creamy highlighters, which can accentuate oily areas of the face.

Sensitive skin: sensitive skin prefers hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic make-up products. Whatever the form, the key is to choose a gentle, fragrance-free highlighter to avoid irritation.
