How to apply eye make-up?

How to apply eye make-up?

Coralie Techer

How to enhance your eyes with make-up? Choosing the right eye shadow, getting the right liner line and everything you need to know about mascara... We've got all the tips you need for a totally successful eye make-up look!

A touch of lipstick and a made-up look can totally change our appearance. Eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, pencils of all kinds, the choice is vast to make your eyes the most charming part of your appearance. But it's all about using the right tips and knowing how to handle the brush. Eye make-up shouldn't be too heavy, but it should still be noticeable. It should match the color of the eyes, and be neither too classic to avoid a cheesy look, nor too original to border on eccentricity. It requires skill and dexterity!

Penser à l'anti-cerne avant de se maquiller les yeux

Concealer is an excellent way to get brighter, more awake eyes. It adds a touch of light that cancels out the tired effect of dark circles. It's best to choose a concealer suited to your skin and lifestyle. There are formulas with varying degrees of coverage, hydration, lightness and long-lasting hold.

Mascara, a beauty asset not to be neglected

It's said to be the number one step to an awakened, seductive look. Mascara is the charm we should all have in our beauty kit for perfect doe eyes. Modern formulas are designed to prevent allergies, respect sensitive eyes and ensure long-lasting make-up without irritated eyes at the end of the day. A major step forward, in addition to our already revolutionary waterproof products.

Why is mascara necessary for successful eye make-up? Mascara lengthens lashes and opens the eyes in a single brushstroke (especially for droopy eyelids). Mascara instantly gives the impression of awakened eyes, even when the face is tired. Black mascara accentuates the eyes with its intense shade, and fleshes out the existing lash line without the need for extensions. For greater effectiveness, mascara can be combined with a black pencil on the inside of the eye, or with the mechanical action of an eyelash curler. The tool should be used on bare lashes (before mascara) to avoid breakage. For long, natural-looking lashes, there's always the action of eyelash serum, which acts deep down to promote hair growth.

How to apply mascara Step by step, after using an eyelash curler (or not), apply mascara to lashes, starting from the base of the lash and working upwards in a zigzag motion (to avoid clumping). Then stretch the brush outwards to open up the eyes and accentuate the doe-eye effect. The operation can be repeated once or twice, depending on the desired intensity, but be careful not to overload the lashes, as this could have the opposite effect, i.e. a heavy, overloaded look.

How to apply eyeliner for a strong look

For a smoky, mysterious, glamorous or rock'n'roll look, nothing beats the liner, the thick, intense black line that has been dressing the eyes of men and women for millennia. In Eastern countries, where kohl is highly prized, its role is above all protective. The thick black line is designed to prevent external aggressions from reaching the eye (dust, perspiration, heat, sunlight). Nowadays, this practical asset has become an aesthetic coquetry, and is used in the form of eyeliner. More or less fine, depending on the desired effect, eyeliner comes in all sorts of formats. From pencil to brush to felt-tip, from the thinnest lead to the thickest, there's something for everyone. Although a popular beauty feature, liner is far from easy to achieve. It's even reserved for the initiated!

Eyeliner has one great advantage: it shapes the eyes. Round, over-stretched or over-closed eyes can adopt the desired shape.

Which eyeliner format to choose?

  • For a discreet look, opt for eyeliner in pencil format, with its less intense lead for subtle make-up around the eye. You can even blend it with your finger for a smocky eye effect.
  • For a pin-up look, we opt for the brush, but beware: it's for initiates only, as it's difficult to handle.
  • For beginners, we prefer the felt-tip format. It's easy to handle, and draws a straight, intense line without too much trouble. But be careful to be precise, because there's no room for error with liner. Unless you start all over again!

It' s a bad idea to stretch the eyelid when applying liner! The thin, fragile skin of the mobile eyelid is easily damaged and marked. Even if stretching the eyelid can help to achieve a more successful line, this technique is bad for the skin.

Creamy or powdery blush: which to choose?

Extremely trendy, eye shadow palettes continue to flood the cosmetics market. Sophisticated packaging, limited editions, sparkling shades, intense pigments, iridescent, matte, powdery... All the codes are brought together to make them veritable collector's items. It's easy to become an addict! In this maze of tempting choices, it quickly becomes difficult to choose. To avoid going overboard (and accumulating 50 palettes that will never really be used), we make the right choice and opt for a palette that's sure to do the trick.

  • Powder eyeshadow: this is the foundation of eyeshadow. Powder eyeshadow can be found in every palette. It is perfectly applied to prepared skin (moisturized and prepared with a smoothing base) using a flat brush or a beveled brush to stretch the eye. It is best avoided on mature skin, as it will tend to mark fine lines, and similarly on dry, problematic skin.
  • Creamy shadows: little nuggets in this field, creamy shadows are malleable and suitable for just about all skin types. Slightly more expensive than their powdery counterparts, creamy blushes are perfect for glossy make-up and a lustrous look. We love them in nude shades that blend precisely onto the mobile eyelid. Pair them with a touch of powder blush for an ultra-sophisticated make-up look.

Before applying any make-up, it's important to prepare your skin! As with the complexion, eye make-up (upper or lower eyelid) requires preparation with a smoothing base. In addition to enabling pigments to bond properly to the skin, the base provides long-lasting hold.

How to apply eye makeup according to eye color?

Brown eye make-up: warm, orangey shades such as bronze, ochre, gold and rust are preferred, as are nude tones such as beige, cream, khaki and purple for eyelid make-up... If you have brown eyes and matte skin, simply avoid light shades!

Make-up for blue eyes: we sublimate with cool tones such as mauve, violet, navy blue, black, silver, metallic, but also copper and gold and bright colors. Avoid warm, orangey tones, which can make you look sickly, especially if you have fair skin.

Green-eye make-up: avoid overly flashy colors; green eyes prefer more discreet but no less intense shades such as brown, black, lilac, violet, plum...

Make-up for black eyes: intensify the look with a strong eye shadow color such as plum, warm brown tones, copper, ochre... In short, black eyes can do just about anything.

Eyebrow makeup to complement eye makeup

Eyebrow make-up is a bit of a handful, but once you've got the hang of it, it can be the easiest step of all. Whether for a daytime makeover or an evening makeover, eyebrow make-up can change everything about the face's appearance. In fact, depending on the make-up technique, you can redefine the harmony of your face by filling in a sparse line, redrawing a broken line or even making eyebrows non-existent.
