What to (absolutely) avoid after a hyaluronic acid injection
What to (absolutely) avoid after a hyaluronic acid injection
Coralie Techer
Hyaluronic acid injection is a fairly common non-invasive procedure. Increasingly practiced, it is worth remembering what you should definitely not do after having had it, in order to keep a long-lasting result.
Since a hyaluronic acid injection (in the lips or elsewhere on the face) is a painless and quick operation (between 10 and 20 minutes per session), one can quickly think about returning to a completely normal life, without taking the slightest precaution. Error! As with any physical intervention (however small), the injection of hyaluronic acid which changes the appearance and injects a foreign body into the body, requires taking precautions afterwards. Several points must therefore be taken into account to avoid side effects but also to keep the result of the session as much as possible and not ruin the doctor's work.
Things to avoid after a hyaluronic acid injection
Hyaluronic acid injection is an aesthetic medicine operation that consists of injecting hyaluronic acid into one or more targeted areas in order to restore curves and fill in sagging. This technique performed by a cosmetic surgeon is widely used to fill in dark circles, redraw the oval of the face or even increase volume by lip injections for example. The injection session being relatively quick and without major constraints, the operation does not cause any social exclusion and allows a return (almost) to normal when leaving the office! However, you have to be careful in the days following the operation, to avoid ruining the result or suffering from side effects, we will avoid these few points...

Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun
In the hours or days following the injections of this filler, it is possible that small swellings or redness appear around the treated area. These marks never last very long, and fade after a maximum of one week. To ensure that they do not last or leave unwanted marks over time, it is recommended to avoid any exposure to the sun for 48 hours until they disappear! It is important to know that a hematoma or any spots exposed to UV rays (natural or artificial) take much longer to disappear and can even leave an indelible mark. Not to mention that the action of UV rays can also significantly reduce the effect of hyaluronic acid...
Avoid intense or prolonged efforts
After a hyaluronic acid injection, you are strongly advised to rest or at least avoid intense or prolonged efforts that could increase body heat and therefore completely harm the result of the operation! The rest period allows the hyaluronic acid to properly spread under the epidermis in the injected area. After 48 hours you can resume your usual routine.
Avoid massages in the area, saunas or hammams
Just like for exercise, massages are prohibited for 48 hours. Under the effect of massage, hyaluronic acid could have difficulty spreading properly to provide a uniform result! We also avoid saunas and hammams which represent too great a source of heat for the body and could cause the acid to harden under the dermis.
Avoid relieving any inflammation with ice or anti-inflammatories.
After an acid injection in the lips, you may feel the discomfort of inflammation or a slight tingling that persists for the first few hours. This is normal! However, you should avoid treating it with ice or anti-inflammatories. As doctors recommend, it is better to apply a compress soaked in cool water every hour to prevent swelling and calm any tingling.

What happens if you don't follow the doctor's instructions after the injections?
The advice given above is also what your doctor will generally prescribe. These are essential steps to follow to avoid completely harming the proper functioning of the acid injections. Indeed, if the recommendations are not followed, it is very likely that the acid will not spread properly under the dermis and will leave a reduced result. In extreme cases, the acid can also harden and be poorly placed, thus causing unsightly swelling to appear. After the 48-hour period, if no suspicious symptoms have appeared, you can then resume your normal life and apply your usual care products such as your lip balm or eyelash serum , for example!
