How do I apply self-tanner?

How do I apply self-tanner?

Coralie Techer

Self-tanner is a good way to get a tanned complexion before the vacation sun, but it does require a certain dexterity. How do you apply it properly? We tell you all about it.

There's nothing prettier than a tanned complexion to enhance a summer look. But we don't always have the time to sit down for tanning sessions under the summer sun. To remedy this, we're lucky enough to be able to rely on self-tanning products, but these require a certain dexterity and, above all, you mustn't overuse them.

How to choose your self-tanner?

When choosing a self-tanner, it's important to take several factors into account to find the one that best suits your skin type but also your personal preferences, such as: the type of product (spray, wipe, mousse, lotion or self-tanning cream), the intensity of tan you want (light and natural or intense and dark), the list of ingredients (always check to make sure there's no risk of allergy) and the price (there's something for everyone).

Préparer sa peau avant l'application de son autobronzant

Proper preparation according to your skin type is essential before applying your self-tanning product, to guarantee an even, more satisfying result. Here are a few steps to follow to prepare your skin before applying self-tanner:

  1. Exfoliation: Before applying self-tanner, exfoliate your skin with a body scrub (and face scrub if you wish to self-tan this area) to remove dead cells, impurities and residues of previous products. Use a gentle body scrub or an exfoliant specially designed to prepare the skin before self-tanning. Concentrate particularly on rough areas, such as elbows, knees and heels. Rinse thoroughly after exfoliation and dry thoroughly.

  2. Light moisturizing: After exfoliation, lightly moisturize your skin with a light moisturizing lotion or cream. If you have dry skin, you can double the dose. This will help soften the skin and prevent rough patches that can absorb self-tanner unevenly.

  3. Waxing: If you plan to wax, do so before applying the self-tanner. Waxing can remove some of the self-tanner, so it's best to do it in advance. If you need to wax after applying self-tanner, wait at least 24 hours to allow the color to soak in properly.

  4. Protecting specific areas: If you have rough or dry areas, such as elbows, knees, heels or ankles, you can apply a small amount of moisturizing lotion or Vaseline to prevent excessive absorption of self-tanner in these areas.

Steps for applying self-tanner

Once the skin has been prepared, you can proceed to apply the self-tanner according to the instructions supplied with the product you have chosen, but also following these different steps to avoid excess self-tanner on the skin and ensure an even tan e:

Gloves or applicator :

Pour éviter les taches sur les mains, il est recommandé d'utiliser des gants en latex ou un applicateur d'autobronzant. Cela permet une application plus précise et uniforme.

Start with the legs:

Start by applying the self-tanner to your legs in circular movements. Work gradually upwards to avoid rubbing or staining areas already treated.

Arms and torso:

Apply self-tanner to your arms, chest and abdomen using circular or sweeping movements. Be sure to spread the product evenly to ensure a beautiful tan.

Do the back :

If you can't reach your back, ask someone to help you apply the tanning product. Alternatively, you can use a long-handled applicator or a self-tanning spray specially designed for the back.

For the face:

For the face, use a self-tanner specially formulated for this delicate area. Apply a dab of product carefully, avoiding eyes, eyebrows and hairline. Blend well on neck and ears to avoid marks.

Finishes :

Once you've applied the self-tanner to all the desired areas, check for any uneven areas or spots and blend them out with a clean glove or soft cloth. Be careful not to rub too hard to remove the self-tanner.

Drying time :

Allow self-tanner to dry completely before dressing. Follow product instructions for recommended drying time. Avoid contact with water or perspiration during this period.

Tanning care :

After application, follow the product's recommendations for tan maintenance. Some brands suggest avoiding hot showers or prolonged baths, while others may recommend applying a moisturizer after self-tanning to prolong the duration of the tan.

Please bear in mind that self-tanner does not provide protection against UV rays. If you plan to expose yourself to the sun, always use a sunscreen with an appropriate SPF (50 in summer) to protect your skin.
