How to pluck your eyebrows yourself?
Coralie Techer
Eyebrows are probably the most important element in a harmonious face. To make sure you don't mess up your eyebrows at home, follow these helpful tips.
As we like to tell you, eyebrows should be taken seriously. These two expression lines that frame the eyes are absolutely essential to facial harmony! While we've come to love them as full, even bushy, brows in recent years, it's no less important to maintain them at the salon or at home.

Eyebrow waxing: a procedure to be prepared for
While it's quick and easy to do in an institute, eyebrow plucking requires a certain dexterity and, above all, preparation, as it involves a number of essential steps to achieve a satisfactory result. Fortunately, there's a simple method to help you achieve the ideal line!
Before you start, make sure you have everything you need at hand: tweezers, pencil (chopstick or straw), eyebrow brush, scissors.
Step 1: Define the start and arch of the eyebrow
Eyebrows are naturally arched. Sometimes the arch is more or less pronounced, depending on the natural hair pattern and individual morphology. It can also be completely obliterated due to excess hair.
The easiest way to draw your bow is with a pencil, chopstick or straw (any long, thin object). Place the pencil or chopstick on the axis between the inner corner of the eye and the base of the nostril. This fictitious line will define the beginning of the eyebrow. If any hairs protrude beyond this line, they must be plucked. To find the arc's starting point, move the pencil so that it passes through the center of the pupil. Its arrival point at eyebrow level will be exactly where the arc takes shape. It's best to avoid the circumflex accent effect, which gives a permanently circumspect look...
Step 2: Define the outer limit of the eyebrow
An extended eyebrow isn't always what's needed for a harmonious line! To define the outer limit of the eyebrow, we use a pencil (chopstick or straw). The pencil is still placed at the base of the nostril, but this time aligned with the outer corner of the eye. Its arrival point at eyebrow level defines the end of the eyebrow. If your original line extends beyond the pencil, the hairs must be removed.
This technique creates eyebrows that frame the eyes perfectly! Once you've plucked the hairs protruding from the defined points, you can perfect the plucking by trimming any hairs that are too long to create a perfect line. To do this, brush the hairs upwards; those that extend a little too far beyond the line can be trimmed with the small scissors.
How do you prepare your skin for hair removal?
Eyebrow plucking isn't always fun. In addition to the fear of having a heavy hand on the hairs to be removed, the action isn't always pleasant. Tweezing, whether with thread, wax or tweezers, can be painful. Particularly on the face, where the skin is the thinnest on the body.
To prevent this moment from being too unpleasant, you need to prepare your skin. Before waxing, don't hesitate to apply a compress of warm water to your skin, or even take a hot shower. The hot water and steam will soften the skin and open the pores! This makes hair removal much easier.

The different home hair removal methods
While the most common method is tweezing, there are many different ways to remove eyebrows at home. The best thing is to try them all before choosing the one that suits you best!
Eyebrow waxing
Waxing is a common method used in beauty salons. It requires a certain dexterity, and with it, you can quickly come close to disaster! We recommend that you draw your line with a pencil before waxing, to define the area you don't want to touch. Then place the wax on the hairs that protrude from the line, and you're done. Be careful: on the face, it's best to use a warm wax, or even a cold one, to avoid any risk of burning.
Eyebrow plucking with tweezers
The simplest and least expensive method, since tweezers can be kept for years! As with waxing, we advise you to draw your line with a pencil before waxing. This gives you a precise view of the areas to be waxed. To avoid ingrown hairs, the hair should always be removed in the direction of its growth.
Eyebrow threading
It's probably the most difficult method to handle, but once you've mastered it, threading (an Indian and Asian technique) gives you ultra-clean, well-defined eyebrows. Threading removes the hair precisely and efficiently, so it grows back more slowly! You'll need to be trained in this method before trying it at home, but the best thing is to have it done in a beauty salon!
Post-waxing care
Now that your eyebrows are perfectly plucked, don't hesitate to take care of them! For a more aesthetic look, you can brush them (always upwards) and fix them with special eyebrow gel to give them a "brow-up" effect. You can also play around with make-up to enhance their intensity. In terms of skincare, don't hesitate to apply a moisturizing cream and eye contour serum after waxing (whatever technique you use), and finish off with an eyebrow serum to keep the hairs strong and healthy.
The ultimate solution: opt for permanent hair removal
Permanent eyebrow hair removal refers to techniques aimed at permanently eliminating unwanted eyebrow hair. There are several methods for achieving this, but it's important to note that not all methods are necessarily suitable for the delicate eyebrow area. Here are some of the most common options for permanent eyebrow hair removal:
-
Electrolysis: Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal method that uses an electric current to destroy hair follicles. A thin metal wire is inserted into each hair follicle, and an electric current is applied to destroy them. This can be effective for eyebrows, but care must be taken due to the proximity of the eyes.
-
Laser : Laser hair removal is a popular method of permanently removing hair. A beam of laser light targets the melanin (pigment) in hair follicles, resulting in their destruction. This method can be effective for eyebrows, but requires great precision to avoid touching sensitive areas around the eyes.
-
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): IPL is similar to laser but uses a wider range of light wavelengths. As with lasers, IPL can be used to remove eyebrow hair, but specific expertise is required to avoid risks to the eyes.
-
Thermolysis and electrocoagulation: These methods use heat to destroy hair follicles. They can be effective for eyebrow hair removal, but as with other methods, caution is advised to avoid risks to the eyes.
It's crucial to choose a qualified and experienced professional for any permanent hair removal procedure, especially when treating an area as delicate as the eyebrows. For perfect eyebrows, make sure the practitioner has the expertise to work safely close to the eye area. Before making a decision, learn about the advantages, disadvantages and potential risks of each method, and discuss them with a health or beauty professional to determine which option might be best for you.
