How to protect your skin from the summer sun?

How to protect your skin from the summer sun?

Coralie Techer

To avoid losing your youth and health capital, discover our tips for effectively protecting your skin from the scorching summer sun.

As the harbinger of sunny days, king of our vacations and liberator from bad weather, the sun is loved and worshipped. But if in many ways it's good for us (it boosts morale and the immune system, encourages the synthesis of vitamin D for the body, soothes eyestrain and so much more...) it can, when abused, do us quite a bit of harm. It's no secret that too much sun can cause real health hazards, the most extreme of which is skin cancer. Parental monologue about the right spread of sun cream has never been a way of spoiling our summer vacations, but a serious recommendation.

What are the dangers of the sun?

A quick reminder: the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause more or less irreversible damage. For the skin: sunburn, 2nd to 4th degree burns, brown spots, white spots, depigmentation, early appearance of wrinkles (skin aging) and above all cancers (melanomas and carcinomas.) But also for the eyes: serious damage to the cornea, cataracts or retinal degeneration, are dangers not to be taken lightly. As for sunstroke and sunburn, they act surreptitiously in the evening after long exposure, are not pleasant, and can be more or less serious.

Knowing when to expose yourself to avoid danger

Protecting your skin means first and foremost being well informed. Understanding the dangers and knowing how to avoid them is 90% of the job. The sun's intensity varies according to the time of day... As we all know, it's sometimes very tempting to sunbathe at lunchtime, but it's best to avoid direct exposure from 11am to 2pm (the sun reaches its zenith at 12pm, so picnics and beach lunches are best done in the shade). To enjoy a real moment of sunbathing in complete serenity and get a beautiful tan, indulge yourself from 4 p.m. and not before!

The right gestures for protected skin

As well as paying attention to the hours you spend in the sun, there are a few other things you can do to pamper your skin against UV rays.

skin protection - summer

Essential sun protection:

Sunscreen comes to mind first and foremost. Yes, it's a good barrier, but it's not infallible! First and foremost, you need to choose a good one, preferably one that's Ocean Friendly if you're going swimming, as sunscreens can be a dangerous pollutant for marine fauna. Then you need to remember to renew it, especially after a spell in the water. For it to be effective, you need to cream yourself every two hours or so... Nowadays, there are a multitude of different sun protection products, from genuine creams to foams, milks, oils and even water sprays! There's something for everyone, as long as you stick with it. Always use at least SPF 30, or more if your skin is prone to sunburn. Last but not least, remember to protect your lips with a special summer lip balm! In the evening, after a day in the sun, you can add an ultra-moisturizing , plumping lip balm

The sun can also wreak havoc on a trip into town. In summer, a stroll in the heat is enough to be a hazard! If you absolutely must go out when the sun is at its zenith, make sure you're dressed appropriately. First of all, cover your head to avoid sunstroke. Just the thing, this year again, headgear is more than trendy. Bob, beret, gavroche, cape or cap, it's up to you! When it comes to accessories, we're all about sunglasses for maximum UV protection. Of course, we're careful to choose lenses that meet CE standards (CE3 or CE4), and we wear a t-shirt or shirt that covers at least the shoulders and chest!

Prepare your skin beforehand... How?

It's increasingly advisable to prepare your skin before summer. Particularly for fair-skinned, sensitive people or those with sun allergies (also known as lucite). There are several ways to do this, including gradual exposure ! It's tempting to indulge in an afternoon of intense sunbathing under the first rays, but it's not a good idea! Our skin needs to adapt gradually. We start slowly, an hour here, an hour there... We think about dietary supplement cures. Whether in the form of gummies, ampoules or capsules, the dietary supplement you choose must suit your body. If in doubt, check with a health professional. To prepare your skin, you also need to think about what you put on your plate. From May onwards, we eat seasonal produce and opt for colorful fruits and vegetables, bursting with vitamins and beta-carotene that saturate the epidermis, enriching it with antioxidants and providing natural protection against the aggression of UV rays. Beautiful skin always needs to be well moisturized! The same goes for protection! A combination of gentle exfoliation and moisturizing body cream will keep your skin permeable to the sun all summer long. Note that regular exfoliation in this season also helps maintain a beautiful, even tan.

Repairing your skin after the sun:

Prepare before, repair after! Even well-prepared skin can suffer from the sun. You should always remember to pamper your skin after your daily outings. An after-sun lotion or plant oils will do the trick to soothe aggressed skin. The ideal natural sunburn remedy? Aloe vera gel (neutral and organic), whose healing and antibacterial properties work wonders on slightly burned skin. As for facial skin, if you want to keep it in good shape, never skip your skincare routine! It's very important.

Beware of UV machines:

Last but not least. For a long time, they were recommended to prepare the skin for the sun, or more superficially to keep the complexion golden and the skin tanned during the winter... Today, the danger of these machines is well and truly proven. In fact, the opposite is true: the artificial rays oxidize melanin, considerably damaging the skin's sun protection potential.

Did you know? It's essential to protect your eyes from the sun. Wearing a cap, hat, visor and sunglasses does 90% of the job. But did you know that eyelashes also play a major role in protecting the retina from UV rays? To make sure your eyes are 100% protected, take care of your lashes with our ROSELASH serum, which ensures healthy lashes thanks to its natural formula enriched with biotin!
