How to dye your eyebrows with henna

How to dye your eyebrows with henna

Coralie Techer

Eyebrow tinting is a widespread practice for filling in sparse lines, marking eyebrows or simply perfecting restructuring. Henna is a natural, affordable solution! How do you use it? We tell you all about it.

Marked, clean, full eyebrows are all the rage. While semi-permanent make-up methods are in full swing, so are eyebrow restructuring and tinting! In the latter category, there are several solutions to achieve the desired result and say goodbye to sparse, too-light or white eyebrows. Tinting can be done professionally in an institute, but the main advantage is that it can also be done naturally at home using henna... Perfect eyebrows are yours!

As a reminder, henna is a plant whose leaves are crushed to obtain a totally natural coloring powder. This powder is used for henna tattoos, hair coloring and eyebrow tinting. It's an excellent alternative for those who suffer from allergies to the chemicals in conventional dyes, or those who simply want to stick to a natural routine. Unlike conventional dyes, henna also acts as a skincare product, its natural origin helping, among other things, to promote hair regrowth. For even more beautiful eyebrows, however, you can continue to apply eyebrow serum.

What are the steps involved in henna eyebrow tinting?

Traditional henna dyeing is generally done at home (which is its advantage), and is not difficult to apply, but does require a certain dexterity, as henna quickly marks the skin and a stray patch can quickly ruin the desired effect. To achieve beautiful eyebrows, certain steps must be followed:

1 - Tweeze your eyebrows cleanly to prepare the area

For henna to be successful, it must be applied to a clean, prepared brow bone. Before applying henna, make sure you carefully pluck your eyebrows. In this way, you can draw a clean, precise line that will precisely define the area to be dyed!

2 - Choosing the right dye color

There are several henna colors to choose from (all in natural tones, nothing extravagant). Before dyeing your eyebrows, it's best to choose the color that best suits your skin tone. It's a good idea to avoid big differences: a red henna will look very bad if you have black hair, for example... In general, it's advisable to choose your exact color or one tone above. But everyone is free to do as they please!

3 - How to prepare your own homemade dye?

Nothing too complicated. Henna-based eyebrow tints are generally sold in kits, which contain all the materials needed for proper color preparation. So be sure to buy a complete kit! The dye can be prepared with a rosewater base for added sensoriality, but above all to enable the henna to adhere better to the hair. Mix in the powder until it dissolves completely and a smooth paste is obtained. Ready to use!

4 - How to properly apply your henna dye?

This is where things can get tricky... You have to be careful and meticulous to apply the henna without spilling over! In fact, to avoid unwelcome stains, you can apply a hypoallergenic glue around your eyebrows. If the henna overflows, it will settle on the glue, which can then be easily removed. To apply the henna, it's best to use a brush (angled for greater control), which will delicately shape the hairs for the desired fullness. It's advisable to leave the dye on for 10 to 15 minutes, as it may be too dark beyond this time.

5 - How to remove excess henna after dyeing?

Once the application time has elapsed, remove the excess henna paste from the eyebrows. This too is a delicate operation, as you must avoid getting it everywhere. The first step is to use a dry cotton swab to remove any excess, followed by a cotton pad soaked in water to clean the area.

How to care for your dye?

Now that the dye has been applied and the eyebrows are perfect again, it's time to maintain the result so it doesn't deteriorate. Maintaining henna-colored eyebrows is pretty straightforward. Once the henna has been applied and the excess removed, it's advisable to avoid getting the eyebrows wet (even if henna marks quickly, it's better not to take any risks) for around 12 hours. So avoid unexpected bathing! After that, and beyond the first few days, to keep your dye as beautiful and marked as possible, you should avoid using overly abrasive products such as coarse-grained scrubs. We also try to use foamy cleansers rather than oil-based ones, which could lighten the henna or even make it disappear! Apart from these small details, henna coloring is pretty easy to live with. It just needs to be renewed every six weeks, unlike permanent make-up, which is designed to last for years.
