How can you tell the difference between natural and organic cosmetics?

How can you tell the difference between natural and organic cosmetics?

Coralie Techer

The world of beauty is constantly evolving. Its aim? To adapt to our needs and offer us products that are more and more respectful of our skin and our environment, with organic or natural labels. But how can we tell the difference between the two?

These days, consumers are more aware of the importance of preserving our environment. The world is increasingly turning towards more ethical and, let's say, more responsible modes of consumption and production. The desire to be beautiful in a natural way has become a real trend, and cosmetics brands are well aware of this, claiming organic or natural labels here and there. However, it's easy to get confused and lose sight of the difference between the two. To know what you're buying, it's important to put things in their proper place.

Which cosmetics should I choose for my skincare, between natural and organic?

A natural cosmetic is a cosmetic product made with 95% ingredients of natural origin, free from additives such as kerosenes, petroleum derivatives, mineral oils and synthetic preservatives. ORGANIC cosmetics are non-toxic products, mainly derived from organic farming. They contain no chemical derivatives such as pesticides, chemical fertilizers, chemical herbicides or synthetic fertilizers, are GMO-free and free from chemical preservatives, artificial flavors and additives.

Organic cosmetics are paraben- and silicone-free, biodegradable and not tested on animals. However, some organic cosmetics do contain a few synthetic ingredients, but in France, the most harmful are banned by the health authorities.

Are organic products more expensive?

It's not a rule, there are organic cosmetics that don't cost the earth at all. A simple example: the famous Aleppo soap. It's organic, gentle for face and body, and far from exorbitantly expensive. The same goes for natural vegetable oils (always cold-pressed) and Marseille soap. When an organic product is expensive, it's because the manufacturing process requires more work, more materials and more labor. But sometimes it's better to spend a few extra euros for healthy self-care! It's important to choose a responsible face and body beauty routine . It's bound to have a positive impact on our health and even our environment. This includes favoring organic farming, eco-friendly packaging and legal workmanship, not tested on animals.

How do you decipher labels?

If you're not a biochemist, this is no easy task, of course. But it's a good idea to learn the basics, to make sure we don't get fooled by the famous packaging on our beauty products. Fortunately, there are apps that do the job for us. Apps are also a good way of sorting out our closets!

Here's a useful selection to help you decode cosmetic gobbledygook.

- INCI BEAUTY

INCI BEAUTY is an application that allows you toanalyze the composition of beauty products. Simply scan the product's barcode to obtain information on the ingredients it contains.

INCI BEAUTY application

The color-coded application rates each component according to its level of danger or potentially undesirable effects on humans and the environment. It's easy to use: just take a photo of the barcode using the application's built-in scanner, and the application will immediately report on the product's status.

- Cosmethics

It's an application that analyzes the list of ingredients by scanning a product's barcode. An icon appears, warning you if it contains more or less harmful substances according to the list of INCI names (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients).

Product composition and botanical components in Latin

Deciphering organic cosmetics isn't exactly easy, as the jargon used is rather complicated. To help you choose your cosmetics with a clear conscience, here are a few steps to help you recognize whether you're dealing with an organic cosmetic or a conventional synthetic product.

Generally speaking, on the packaging of every cosmetic product, the ingredients must be listed in Latin, in descending order, meaning that the 1st ingredient on the list is present in the greatest quantity in the product. The last is present in lower concentration. A self-respecting cosmetics brand will take the time to mention the list of ingredients and the names of natural plant active ingredients, along with the Latin names of the plants from which they are extracted.

The different labels

Labels are a real guarantee of safety and efficacy. Indeed, before a brand is awarded a label, it undergoes numerous tests to rule out the risk of undesirable side effects. The composition of the products is studied, so as to promise a natural product that respects the consumer's health and the planet. These labels differ from country to country. Here is a list of the organic labels most frequently found on cosmetics marketed in France.

The ecocert label

Ecocert is an inspection and certification body. It was the first certification body to develop documentation for ecological and organic cosmetics. The Ecocert charter is approved by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and by the French Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industry.

This label imposes a number of constraints to guarantee an environmentally-friendly cosmetic product:

The use of ingredients derived from renewable resources and transformed using environmentally friendly processes, The verified label:

  • The absence of GMOs, parabens, phenoxyethanol, silicones, PEGs, synthetic fragrances and colorants, and ingredients of animal origin.
  • The organization checks whether packaging is biodegradable or recyclable.

There is a minimum threshold of natural and organically grown ingredients to achieve certification: 95% minimum of total ingredients must be natural or ofnatural origin.

The Cosmébio label

Cosmébio is, above all, a certification body that guarantees the composition of organic products . It is based on demanding specifications and ethical values. An inspection by an independent certifier is mandatory every year to verify product compliance.

The AB label

The organic label means that the farmer behind the product has followed the organic farming method, a specific agricultural production system that excludes the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and genetically modified organisms, and guarantees that the farming and agronomic system respects the environment and animal welfare.
