Microneedling: everything you need to know about this facial treatment

Microneedling: everything you need to know about this facial treatment

Coralie Techer

Facial care methods are evolving. More and more solutions are being proposed for perfect skin! Microneedling is one of them. Let's take a closer look at this revolutionary treatment.

When it comes to beauty, and particularly facial care, the choice is vast... Every year, new products flourish in beauty salons to care for our skin, restore radiance to a tired complexion or revive the oval of a sagging face.

While kobido massage, facial yoga and facial drainage are all popular treatments for restoring youthfulness through manual massage techniques, microneedling, which relies on the use of a small device, is also slowly but surely making its way to the podium of revolutionary skin care! For some years now, microneedling has been hailed as a promising, non-invasive treatment designed to restore the skin's beauty by boosting cell regeneration.

To complement this beauty technique, we recommend the use of suitable home care products, such as a serum for dark circles, which will enhance the look and perfect the effects of microneedling!

What is microneedling?

Its name is intriguing, and its appearance can even be frightening! Microneedling is the practice of perforating the various layers of the dermis to encourage regeneration... These tiny perforations are made using a roller or a pen fitted with fine needles. Sometimes the accessory is manual, sometimes electric.

It begs the question: why inflict such a treatment on yourself? It's important to know that these multiple small cuts enable the skin care products applied during the treatment to penetrate deep into the skin, and therefore act almost instantaneously. The repeated perforations also stimulate the skin's healing process, while boosting collagen and elastin production, enabling the skin to regenerate. In short, everything that makes for beautiful skin gets a boost!

The expected effects of microneedling:

A burst of radiance, an even complexion, reduced wrinkles, more elastic skin, a revived glow, and the removal of acne spots and scars! It also works on stretch marks, helping the skin to regenerate...

How exactly does a microneedling treatment work?

Microneedling is basically a treatment offered in beauty salons by professionals who have been trained in the method using a radiofrequency device! But recently, a number of brands have started offering manual devices, such as derma rollers and derma pens, which enable microneedling to be carried out at home. But when you use them at home, be sure to sterilize the roller or pen before each use! Remember that these needles will penetrate the skin, weakening it before helping it to regenerate.

Practice microneedling at home:

  • We prepare for the session by thoroughly cleaning the skin and disinfecting it of all impurities (this step is essential to avoid any infections!).
  • Apply the skincare products of your choice, generally a serum for its intense, rich and deep action.
  • Sterilize the tip of the roller with the needles! It can be placed in boiling water.
  • The roller is passed gently over the skin, both vertically and horizontally.
  • A soothing cream is applied to reduce the inflammation caused by the needles.
  • The roller head is disinfected again!
  • The homemade treatment can last up to ten minutes and should be repeated once a month, depending on the desired result.

Microneedling in a salon:

  • The skin is prepared by the professional, who makes sure it is properly disinfected.
  • The equipment is carefully prepared, and the device is fitted with a single-use head.
  • A microneedling session at the institute lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Does it hurt? Microperforations occur very quickly, and an unpleasant tingling sensation may be felt. Some people may feel more pain than others, depending on their sensitivity!
  • How much does it cost? Prices start at 120€ per session, but it's best to do microneedling as a course of treatment if you want long-lasting results!

What are the indications following the session?

Whether performed at home or in an institute, mirconeedling requires you to follow a few steps to ensure optimal results, but above all to avoid negative side effects! Let's not forget that this is (almost) a minor surgical operation that cuts into the skin, requiring strict post-operative hygiene.

During the day and in the hours following the treatment, avoid :

  • wearing make-up
  • wearing a used mask
  • avoid touching your face with dirty hands
  • change your pillowcase
  • protect your skin from the sun
  • use a clean towel
  • Avoid abrasive treatments for up to a week after treatment!

How to choose a derma roller for microneedling at home?

The most important step in home care is, of course, choosing the right device! Since this is a borderline medical accessory, you don't just buy it on the street corner. Always read the instructions in detail, and pay particular attention to the reviews posted on shopping sites. Even so, it's best to buy from a beauty salon or specialized beauty resale center, with the help of a certified consultant.

Pay attention to needle size and thickness: depending on the area treated and the thickness of the skin. It's best to have several tips on hand, with needles of different sizes and thicknesses, so you can adapt them to the treatment and the desired area.

Pay attention to the quality of materials and their origin: you don't buy your appliance from a dubious website... Choose a recognized brand, and above all one manufactured to European standards. Needles should be bio-compatible and made of titanium (also used for surgical equipment).

WARNING: if you have problem skin (eczema, herpes, frequent irritation or unhealed skin), microneedling should be avoided! If in doubt, it's always best to go to an institute where a specialized practitioner can answer any questions you may have.
