Rough skin on the face: what can be done?

Coralie Techer

Rough skin on the face can be caused by a number of factors of varying importance. What can you do about it? We tell you all about it.

Rough, dry facial skin is characterized by an uneven, grainy, or rough texture in the stratum corneum. It can also be accompanied by red skin or white scales. Rough facial skin can, in some cases, be considered a skin condition. Fortunately, there are effective solutions to address this problem and quickly restore soft, smooth skin texture, as well as say goodbye to the dull complexion that usually accompanies it.

Simply explore different methods and tips to find the ideal treatment for rough facial skin. By focusing on moisturizing, exfoliation, appropriate skin care and good habits, you can be sure of regaining baby-soft skin...

What are the possible causes of rough skin?

Several factors can contribute to the granular or rough appearance of the skin:

Dehydration

Lack of moisture is one of the main causes of rough, granular skin. When skin doesn't get enough moisture, it can become dry, dehydrated and therefore rough to the touch. In some cases, this can even lead to keratosis pilaris (small red pimples on the surface of the skin, leaving a granular feel). To remedy this, you need to adopt a beauty routine that takes account of the situation, and above all, drink enough water.

Poor (or non-existent) exfoliation

The accumulation of dead cells on the skin's surface can lead to a rough texture. If exfoliation is not carried out regularly or properly, dead cells can clog pores and roughen skin.

Environmental factors

Excessive exposure to sun, wind, cold or extreme climatic conditions can damage the skin's protective barrier, resulting in dryness and roughness.

Genetic factors

Some people have naturally rougher skin due to genetic factors. Skin texture can be influenced by heredity, and may be more prone to dryness and roughness, or it may be more prone to wrinkles.

Le temps qui passe

The natural aging process can also contribute to skin roughness. As we age, collagen and elastin production decreases, which can lead to reduced skin elasticity and a rougher texture.

Unsuitable care products

Using products that are aggressive or unsuitable for your skin type can also cause roughness. Some products contain irritating or drying ingredients that can alter the cutaneous barrier and make skin rough.

Underlying medical conditions

Certain medical conditions such as eczema, psoriasis or atopic dermatitis can cause skin roughness. In these cases, it's important to consult a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

It is essential to identify the underlying cause of skin roughness so that the right care and treatment can be chosen to resolve the problem. If roughness persists despite a good skincare routine, it's advisable to consult a healthcare professional, such as a dermatologist, for personalized medical advice.

What can be done about rough skin?

Pour tenter de retrouver une peau douce, il faut adopter la bonne routine.

Deep moisturizing: Moisturizing is the key to treating rough facial skin. Choose a moisturizing cream suited to your skin type and apply it morning and night. Choose products containing nourishing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerine or sweet almond oil. For even more intense hydration, you can also use a moisturizing serum before your cream.

Suitable skin care products: there's no such thing as a miracle product, but to effectively treat rough skin, first and foremost opt for cosmetic skin care products specifically formulated for the problem. Look for moisturizers like eye serums and face creams, or plant oils containing soothing ingredients like aloe vera, rose hip oil or shea butter. Opt for gentle yet effective cleansers such as gels containing salicylic acid (an excellent anti-inflammatory). These ingredients help calm irritation, reduce redness and limit imperfections, while restoring the skin barrier. You can also opt for purifying, moisturizing and repairing masks to give your skin a consistent dose of care.

Sun protection: The sun can aggravate rough skin problems and cause further damage. Always use a sunscreen with a protection factor suited to your skin type, even on cloudy days. Adequate sun protection will help prevent skin roughness from worsening and maintain its natural radiance.

Balanced diet: a healthy lifestyle is a basic precept. A healthy, balanced diet plays an important role in skin health. Make sure you get enough antioxidants, vitamins and essential minerals. Choose foods rich in omega-3s, such as oily fish, nuts and seeds, which contribute to skin health. Avoid foods that are too fatty, sugary or processed, which can cause skin inflammation.

Rough skin on the face may be linked to atopic skin, but it needn't be a source of constant worry. By adopting the right skincare habits and using the right products, you can significantly improve the condition of your skin. The key is to moisturize regularly, exfoliate gently, use appropriate skin care products, protect your skin from the sun (sunscreen every day) and eat a healthy diet. With a little patience and perseverance, you're bound to regain smooth, soft, radiantly beautiful skin.
