Can I use mascara after an eyelash enhancement?

Can I use mascara after an eyelash enhancement?

Coralie Techer

Eyelash enhancement is already a popular way to beautify your eyes and give them a doe-eyed look! This chemical technique lengthens lashes for a glamorous look, but does it allow you to continue wearing make-up? If you're wondering, you've come to the right place!

What exactly is eyelash enhancement?

To set the record straight, eyelash enhancement is a beauty technique that involves giving natural lashes (upper lashes only) a pronounced curl by curling them with a chemical solution. This technique is often used to create the appearance of longer, fuller lashes without the need for eyelash extensions! It's ideal for people with long, straight or damaged lashes.

  • How does an enhancement work? During the procedure, a chemical is applied to the lashes to soften and curl them, then a fixative is applied to maintain the curl. The process is generally painless, can take from 45 minutes to an hour, and can be completed with eyelash tinting... Eyelash enhancement can take between 6 and 8 weeks before the lashes begin to regain their natural curvature. That's a lot longer than a lash extension! This technique is considered problem-free, quick to perform and reliable. But please note (absolutely) that it's important to have it done by a qualified professional to minimize all risks and get the best possible results!

Note that lash enhancement is not the solution for short lashes, as it won't have the desired effect... If you have small lashes, opt for eyelash extensions with a natural effect.

(Read our guide to everything you need to know about eyelash enhancement).

Is it (still) possible to wear make-up after an eyelash enhancement?

It may sound silly, but it's a totally valid question, because it's actually recommended not to apply make-up to the lashes for 24 hours after an eyelash enhancement. This allows the fixative to dry properly and maintain the curvature of the lashes. After this period, it is generally possible to apply make-up to the lashes as normal, but it is important to take certain precautions to prolong the duration of the enhancement.

Waterproof mascara should be avoided to prevent the fixative from dissolving. It's also important not to use an eyelash curler, as this can damage the curvature of the lashes and cancel out the effects of the enhancement. It's also advisable to remove eye make-up carefully every evening to avoid the build-up of make-up residues, which can weigh down lashes and cause them to lose their curvature.

En général, il est préférable de discuter des soins et des recommandations post-procédure avec votre esthéticienne ou votre professionnel en institut de beauté pour obtenir les meilleurs résultats possibles.

What happens if you regularly apply make-up to an eyelash enhancement?

Regular make-up application for lash enhancement can have a number of undesirable effects that must be taken into account to avoid ruining the application...

Alteration of eyelash curvature :

Repeated use of mascara, especially waterproof mascara, can weigh down lashes and cause them to lose their natural curl, negating the effects of enhancement. You can also opt to dye your lashes (ask for a long-lasting dye) during enhancement, as this will give them an intense look and you'll then be able to dispense with mascara.

Weakening of the eyelashes :

Regular make-up application can also weaken lashes, as the removal process can make them more fragile, prone to breakage and thinner.

Eye irritation :

Eye cosmetics can sometimes irritate the eyes, especially if they come into contact with the conjunctiva or eyelids. This can lead to redness, itching, burning or other eye irritations.

Note that it's important to follow the recommendations of your esthetician or beauty professional after an eyelash enhancement. The rules are not established by chance, and help maximize results and avoid any undesirable effects.

Can I continue my usual beauty routine with an eyelash enhancement?

It's totally possible to continue applying your usual beauty routine after an eyelash enhancement. You can even continue to apply your eyelash serum or eye contour care with no problem, but there are a few small adaptations to take into account, such as :

  1. Avoid rubbing or pulling your lashes, as this can cause them to fall out prematurely.

  2. Avoid wetting your lashes for the first 24 hours after the procedure.

  3. Avoid using an oil or two-phase makeup remover, as this can cancel out the enhancement effect by breaking down the fixative.

  4. Avoid eye cosmetics containing harsh ingredients, as they can irritate the eyes and damage the eyelashes.

  5. Use an oil-free, gentle, non-greasy make-up remover to remove eye make-up.

  6. Avoid sleeping on your stomach or side to avoid creasing your eyelashes!

  7. Keep your make-up light, even if it means touching it up several times a day.
