What skincare routine for men?

What skincare routine for men?

Coralie Techer

Gentlemen also deserve good advice on how to look after their skin. Whether you have combination, oily, sensitive, dry or even normal skin, it's important to know how to look after it!

Which products are essential for skin care?

Although men's skin is reputed to be more resistant than women's, there's nothing to stop men (too) enjoying a good skincare routine in summer and winter, to keep their skin healthy and their complexion glowing. Here are a few essential products for a good men's beauty routine:

Facial cleanser

Use a gentle facial cleanser to remove impurities, excess sebum and dirt from your skin. Choose a cleanser that suits your skin type (oily, dry, combination, etc.).

Facial moisturizer

Use a facial moisturizer to help hydrate your skin and protect it from the elements. Opt for an oil-based cream for deeper hydration.

Face and body scrub

Use an exfoliator once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and improve skin texture. Choose a gentle exfoliant that suits your skin type.

Lip balm

Lips can become dry and cracked, so use a moisturizing lip balm to protect them.

Shaving products

If you shave regularly, use a shaving cream to protect your skin from cuts and irritation. Use a soothing aftershave to help calm skin after shaving.

Specific products

Depending on your needs, you can also use specific products such as an anti-acne treatment, an anti-wrinkle cream,an eye contour serum or a face serum.

By adopting a regular skincare routine with these basic and essential products, everyone can afford to keep their skin healthy and looking fresh and radiant.

A routine adapted to your skin type

Combination skin, oily skin, normal skin or dry skin - there's a routine for every skin type!

For oily and combination skin

If you have oily skin, combination skin or both, it's important to adopt a regular skincare routine to help balance sebum production and prevent imperfections such as pimples and blackheads.

  • Cleanse your face twice a day, morning and night, with a gentle facial cleanser designed for oily skin. Choose a cleanser that contains ingredients such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to help eliminate excess sebum and prevent blemishes.
  • Use an alcohol-free facial toner to help balance your skin's pH and remove residual impurities.
  • Choose a light moisturizing cream to prevent your skin from becoming too dry and irritable. Opt for an oil-free moisturizer that does not contain harsh chemicals.
  • Opt for a gentle exfoliant once a week to help remove dead skin cells and unclog pores while avoiding over-activating sebaceous glands.
  • Summer or winter, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (UVB/UVA) with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin barrier against sun damage and ensure beautiful skin for as long as possible.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet containing fresh fruit and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats.
  • Avoid comedogenic oil-based skincare products, such as certain vegetable oils that are not suitable for oily and combination skin. These can clog pores and aggravate excess sebum.

For dry, sensitive skin

If you have sensitive skin, dry skin or both, it's important to adopt a particularly gentle skincare routine to avoid irritation and unwanted reactions. This will promote comfort and respect for the skin.

  • Use a gentle facial cleanser designed specifically for sensitive skin. Choose a cleanser that does not contain irritants such as perfumes or alcohols.
  • Choose an alcohol-free facial toner to help balance skin pH and remove residual impurities. Be sure to choose a toner without harsh chemicals.
  • Choose a moisturizer for sensitive skin to avoid irritation and adverse reactions. Choose a moisturizer that does not contain irritants such as perfumes or alcohols.
  • As with all skin types, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from sun damage. Choose a sunscreen that does not contain harsh chemicals.
  • Avoid abrasive exfoliants, which can irritate sensitive skin. If you wish to use an exfoliant, opt for a gentle one that contains natural ingredients such as fruit enzymes to gently remove dead skin cells.
  • Drink enough water to keep your skin hydrated.

Beard care, an essential part of a man's routine

Looking after your beard requires a regular care routine to keep it healthy and well-maintained. Here's a step-by-step beard care routine:

  1. Cleansing: Use a mild beard cleanser to remove impurities and oils that accumulate in beard hairs. Use lukewarm water to wet the beard and apply the cleanser, massaging gently into the face and beard. Rinse with lukewarm water and dry with a clean towel.

  2. Moisturizing: Use a beard oil or beard balm to moisturize beard hairs and the skin underneath. Beard oils are often based on argan, jojoba or coconut oil, which help nourish the beard and maintain softness and shine. Beard balm often contains natural ingredients such as beeswax and shea butter to help shape and moisturize the beard.

  3. Brushing: Use a beard brush to help detangle and shape the beard. Brush in the direction of hair growth to avoid tangles and pulling.

  4. Trimming or shaving: trimming your beard regularly helps maintain its shape and length. Use beard trimmers or beard scissors to cut beard hairs to the desired length. If you want to shave certain parts of your face, use a beard shaver or electric razor to cut the hairs with precision. Don't forget to use aftershave lotion to soothe the skin and reduce irritation.
  5. The right diet: a healthy, balanced diet can help maintain a healthy beard. Foods rich in protein, vitamins and minerals such as green vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and lean proteins help strengthen beard hair.

By following these basic beard care steps, you'll be sure to keep your beard looking its best!
