Dry hair: how to fix it?

Dry hair: how to fix it?

Coralie Techer

Hair, just like skin, can also be dry. Is it possible to remedy this? We can already do them some good with the right routine.

Everyone has their own skin type, everyone has their own hair type. Whether straight, curly or frizzy, hair can be dry and if we can't completely change its nature, we can at least help it to suffer less damage.

How to tell the difference between dry hair and damaged hair

Dry hair and damaged hair are easily confused. It must be said that they generally present the same symptoms, one is however an unchangeable nature, the other a cause that can be easily remedied.

Characteristics of dry hair

Dry hair is often thin, dehydrated and lacking in sebum. Signs of dry hair include split ends, frizz, roughness and loss of shine. Dry hair tends to be more fragile and break more easily, especially when wet. It is a type of hair, and you can obviously improve its appearance, but dry hair will always be dry.

Characteristics of damaged hair

Damaged hair has typically suffered physical damage such as breakage, tangling, bleaching, harsh chemical treatments, or overuse of styling products and heat. Damaged hair is generally brittle and dry, but can also be oily at the roots and dry at the ends. Damaged hair tends to break easily and can appear dull and lifeless.

In short, if your hair shows signs of dryness, it is probably dry. On the other hand, if it shows signs of physical damage, it is probably damaged. Be careful, it is quite possible for your hair to be both dry and damaged, in which case you need to use suitable products to hydrate and repair it!

What care routine should you adopt when you have dry hair?

As you might expect, dry hair requires targeted attention and care. From styling products to hair care, it is essential to adapt your products to your nature in order to keep your hair beautiful.

Here are the best treatments to adopt when you have dry hair:

  1. Wash your hair with a moisturizing and nourishing shampoo, which does not contain sulfates or parabens, in order to avoid drying out the hair further. As for active ingredients, we focus on shampoos containing vegetable oils, shea butter, sweet almond oil, etc. Washing your hair should be spaced out to allow the hair to breathe and renew itself without hindrance. Ideally, we wash our hair once a week!

  2. Use a super-hydrating conditioner or mask to boost, protect, and deeply nourish dry hair. You can also use leave-in treatments for extra hydration.

  3. Avoid heated styling tools such as flat irons and curling irons which can dry out hair. If you must use a heated tool, always apply a heat protectant to minimize damage.

  4. We forget about brushing our hair when it is wet, because it is more fragile at that time. We prefer to use a wide-toothed comb to gently detangle dry hair.

  5. Use nourishing hair oils to moisturize and protect hair. Argan, coconut and avocado oils are excellent for dry manes... You can also rely on the use of hair serum that will nourish the bulb and boost hair growth in the best conditions, or even hyaluronic acid serum to moisturize the lengths.

  6. For beautiful hair, protect it from the sun by wearing a hat or using a UV/UVB protective spray. Don't hesitate to spray the protector over the entire length, focusing on the ends, which often suffer more from dry hair.

  7. Avoid tight hairstyles like buns, braids and high ponytails, as these can cause damage and breakage to the already fragile fiber of dry hair.

  8. For even more effectiveness, you can have a keratin treatment at a salon. This effective treatment acts in depth and provides the hair with all the nutrients necessary to allow it to start again on the right foot.

How to protect dry hair on a daily basis?

To protect your dry hair on a daily basis, you just need to establish the right little hair routine. In addition to all the points seen above, dry hair will require patience, regularity and attention!

A delicate washing routine

When you have fine, dry and fragile hair, you should implement a delicate and diligent washing routine. For example, you should avoid using aggressive shampoos and always apply a conditioner or hair mask to restore strength and vigor to the hair fiber. For beautiful hair, don't hesitate to turn to completely natural formulations such as shampoos with Ayurvedic powders (particularly moisturizing and nourishing) or solid shampoos and treatments. When it comes to drying, avoid rubbing the towel on your hair! We prefer the gentle use of a microfiber towel that we will delicately dab on the area.

A suitable styling routine

Whether straight or curly, dry hair should not be brushed frequently and especially not vigorously. We prefer the use of a wide-toothed wooden comb to avoid frizz but especially to avoid breaking and shocking the already fragile strands.

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase

This is the practical advice that is suitable for all hair types but especially for dry and fragile hair. The silk pillowcase not only prevents bacteria on the skin but also takes care of the softness of the hair by avoiding creasing it and accelerating its fall!

An oil bath, once a week

The oil bath is an excellent way to take care of your hair. Totally natural, this hair treatment can be made at home by mixing a synergy of vegetable and essential oils suitable for dry hair.

Homemade recipe for an oil bath for dry hair:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, coconut oil or sweet almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon castor oil (optional)
  • 5 drops of lavender or ylang-ylang essential oil (optional)
  1. In a bowl, mix the vegetable oils of your choice. Add the castor oil if using.
  2. If using essential oils, add them to the mixture and mix well.
  3. Warm the mixture slightly in a double boiler or in the microwave. Make sure it is not too hot.
  4. Apply the mixture to your dry hair, gently massaging your scalp. Make sure to distribute the oil well from the roots to the ends.
  5. Cover your hair with a warm towel or shower cap. This will help the oils penetrate deep into the hair.
  6. Leave the oil bath on for at least 30 minutes, or even overnight for even better results.
  7. Rinse your hair with a mild shampoo and lukewarm water. Repeat if necessary.

What to Avoid at All Costs When You Have Dry Hair

In summary, dry hair is not inevitable and can regain softness and shine when given the necessary care. To avoid ending up with dry and damaged hair, we must be careful to follow (imperatively) these instructions:

  • One wash per week. Always accompanied by moisturizing care.
  • We don't comb our hair every day and when we do it's done gently with a wide-toothed wooden comb.
  • We sleep on a silk pillowcase that we change at least every three days.
  • Forget tight hairstyles!
  • We leave aside aggressive colorings which will further dry out the hair, make it brittle and accelerate hair loss...
  • Harsh and weighting hair products containing paraben, sulfate or collagen.
