How to use perfume? Practical tips and advice

How to use perfume? Practical tips and advice

Coralie Techer

Perfume is an art! To ensure a divine scent all day long, here are the best tips and practical advice to apply.

Since the dawn of time (or almost), human beings have been perfuming themselves. Using vegetable and essential oils, rubbing amber on the body or taking flower-scented baths. We all have our own olfactory signature; our scent acts as a marker, and some studies even prove that it is the source of our different affinities with each other. So it's hardly surprising that perfume plays such an important role in our daily lives... In France, 152,000 perfumes are sold every day, that's more than 1.6 bottles of perfume every second, and 55.4 million a year, which brings us to less than one bottle per inhabitant per year, according to the global real-time statistics website planetscope.com.

The art of perfume, our complete guide

Good perfumery isn't simply a matter of spritzing on eau de toilette or eau de parfum* in a hurry. No, it requires a certain dexterity, a knack for it, and habits to establish. To ensure that your fragrance unfolds its notes in your wake for as long as possible, you need to know how to apply it.

*What is the difference between an eau de parfum and an eau de toilette?

Perfume your skin: where and how to spray?

Choose the right fragrance: Choose a fragrance that suits your personal taste and personality. Try different fragrances to find the one that suits you best. Be sure to take into account the season, occasion and environment in which you'll be wearing your type of perfume. For example, an eau de parfum is preferable in winter, as its higher olfactory concentration lasts longer on the skin and is better perceived than in summer, when it may seem too heavy or even intoxicating.

Focus on pulse points: Pulse points are areas of the body where blood vessels are closer to the skin's surface, generating heat and helping to diffuse fragrance. These strategic locations are the wrists, neck, behind the ears, inside the elbows and behind the knees. Apply perfume to one or more of these points for optimum diffusion. Note that a fragrance will work better on dry skin than on dirty, damp skin.

Sprayor lightly apply: Use a light spray or a few drops of the fragrance. It's best to start with a small amount and adjust according to your preferences. Avoid overloading with fragrance, as this can become overwhelming for you and those around you.

Touch up if necessary: Perfume staying power can vary according to the concentration and quality of the fragrance, as well as your own body chemistry. If you want to revive the fragrance throughout the day, you can reapply lightly on pulse points or by spraying a gentle cloud of perfume around you. The latter method

Mistakes to avoid when applying perfume?

Avoid odor mixtures: if you use several fragrances, be careful not to mix them directly on your skin. Different fragrances can interact and alter the scent. If you want to use different fragrances, make sure you apply them to different parts of the body, or that they are made for layering. Some brands offer this kind of alternative, allowing you to create your own olfactory signature.

Avoid rubbing the perfume: when applying perfume, it is essential to avoid rubbing the wrists or other pulse points. This will crush the perfume molecules and alter its olfactory evolution... That would be a shame.

Do not spray directly onto clothing: It's best not to spray perfume directly onto your clothes, as this can cause stains or fabric damage due to the alcohol present in most fragrances. Instead, spray the perfume onto your skin, then let it dry before putting on your clothes.
