How to wear perfume properly? Tips and practical advice

How to wear perfume properly? Tips and practical advice

Coralie Techer

Applying perfume is an art! To ensure a divine scent all day long, here are the best tips and practical tricks to apply.

Since the dawn of time (or almost), human beings have been wearing perfume. Using vegetable oils and essential oils, by rubbing amber on their bodies or by taking flower-scented baths. We all have our own olfactory signature, our smell acts as a marker and some studies even prove that it is the origin of our different affinities between us. It is therefore not surprising that perfume has such a prominent place in our daily lives... In France, 152,000 perfumes are sold per day, or more than 1.6 bottles of perfume every second and 55.4 million per year, which brings us to less than one bottle per inhabitant per year according to the real-time global statistics site: planetscope.com.

The art of applying perfume, our complete guide

Applying perfume well is not just about spraying on your eau de toilette or eau de parfum* in a hurry. No, it requires a certain dexterity, a knack to acquire, habits to anchor. For the juice to deploy its notes in your wake for as long as possible, you have to know how to apply it.

Perfuming your skin: where and how to spray your perfume?

Choose the right perfume: Choose a perfume that matches your personal taste and personality. Try different fragrances to find the one that suits you best. Be sure to consider the season, occasion, and environment in which you will be wearing your type of perfume. For example, in winter, we prefer an eau de parfum because its higher olfactory concentration will last longer on the skin and will be better perceived than in summer when it could seem too heavy or even intoxicating.

Focus on pulse points: Pulse points are areas of the body where blood vessels are closer to the skin's surface, generating heat and helping to diffuse the fragrance. These strategic locations include the wrists, neck, behind the ears, inside the elbows, and behind the knees. Apply the fragrance to one or more of these points for optimal diffusion. Note that a fragrance will apply better to dry skin than to dirty, damp skin.

Spray or apply lightly: Use a light spray or a few drops of the fragrance. It is best to start with a small amount and adjust according to your preference. Avoid overloading with fragrance, as it can become overwhelming for you and those around you.

Touch up if needed: The wear time of the perfume can vary depending on the concentration and quality of the fragrance, as well as your own body chemistry. If you want to revive the scent throughout the day, you can reapply lightly to pulse points or by spritzing a gentle cloud of perfume around you. The latter method

Mistakes to avoid when applying perfume?

Avoid mixing scents: If you use multiple fragrances, be careful not to mix them directly on your skin. Different fragrances can interact and alter the scents. If you want to use different fragrances, make sure to apply them to different parts of the body or that they are made for layering, some brands offer this type of alternative which allows you to create your own olfactory signature.

Avoid rubbing the perfume: When applying perfume, it is absolutely necessary to avoid rubbing the wrists or other pulse points. This will crush the perfume molecules and alter its olfactory evolution... That would be a shame.

Do not spray directly on clothes: It is best not to spray perfume directly on your clothes, as this can cause stains or alterations to the fabric due to the alcohol present in most fragrances. Instead, spray the perfume on your skin and then let it dry before putting on your clothes.
