To keep your lips glamorous and healthy, exfoliation is essential and the good news is that it can be done at home.
Exfoliation is a beauty gesture that adapts from head to toe! Mainly used to rid the surface of the skin of dead skin and other small dirt, exfoliation is also appreciated for its massaging effect which stimulates blood circulation, boosts the production of elastin and collagen in the epidermis but above all it soothes. Body and face scrubs are the most common, the scalp scrub is increasingly talked about and the lip scrub is now a beauty must. Why is lip scrubbing essential?
Beyond the aesthetic side, lip scrubbing has benefits that are important to highlight.
-
Dead Cell Removal: Lips, just like facial skin, accumulate dead cells on their surface. This can lead to dry, rough, and chapped lips. Exfoliation helps remove these dead cells, revealing softer, smoother lips.
-
Prep Lips for Product Application: Before applying lip balm, lipstick, or any other lip care product, it is important to have a smooth base. Since exfoliating your lips removes dead skin and dirt residue, it helps any products you apply afterward adhere better and deliver better results.
-
Improves the appearance of lips: Chapped and dry lips can look unattractive. By removing dead cells and promoting blood circulation in the lip area, exfoliation helps improve the overall appearance of the lips. It can also reduce discoloration and even out lip pigmentation.
-
Preventing Chapped and Cracked Lips: Chapped and dry lips are more likely to crack and cause discomfort such as pain and bleeding. Regular lip scrubbing can help prevent these problems by keeping lips soft, moisturized and well-groomed.
-
Promote the absorption of moisturizers: Once dead cells have been removed, lips are ready to absorb moisturizers more effectively. Exfoliating your lips regularly maximizes the benefits of lip balms and other lip care products.
Obviously, it is important to choose a lip scrub that is suitable for your lips. It should be gentle and non-irritating. You can use a commercial product specifically designed for lips or prepare your own homemade scrub!

How often should you apply a lip scrub?
Lip scrub should be done according to the skin type and condition of the lips. In general, it is recommended to do a lip scrub once or twice a week. It is important not to overdo it and not to do lip scrub too frequently, as this can cause irritation and develop increased sensitivity. However, if you have particularly dry, rough or chapped lips, you can increase the frequency to two to three times a week with a very gentle scrub. The best advice is to listen to your needs!

How to make your own lip scrub?
Nothing is easier than making your own lip scrub. Here is a simple recipe to make your own:
Ingredients :
- 1 teaspoon fine sugar (such as white sugar or brown sugar)
- 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil (such as olive oil, coconut oil, or sweet almond oil)
- 1/2 teaspoon runny honey (optional, but can provide additional moisturizing properties)
Instructions :
-
In a small bowl, mix together the caster sugar and vegetable oil of your choice until you have a crumbly paste. If you want to add honey, mix it in at this point as well.
-
Make sure your lips are clean and free of any product. Then apply the scrub paste to your lips.
-
Use your fingers to gently massage your lips in light circular motions for about a minute. Be careful not to apply excessive pressure to avoid irritating the delicate skin on your lips.
-
Let the scrub sit on your lips for an additional minute to allow the beneficial ingredients to work.
-
Then, rinse your lips with warm water to completely remove the scrub. You can also use a soft towel to gently wipe your lips.
-
Then apply a moisturizing lip balm to seal in moisture and protect your lips.
This homemade lip scrub can be used once or twice a week, or as needed for your lips. Always make sure to store the rest of the scrub in an airtight container for later use!
And after?
To maintain good hydration of the lips, drink the necessary amount of water daily. It is also important to apply a moisturizing lip balm or a vegetable butter (shea butter, mango butter, coconut butter) to make them silky and above all keep them healthy. Do not hesitate to apply your moisturizer as a night mask, when you wake up your lips are silky and plumped up as desired.
