How to take care of your skin in winter

How to take care of your skin in winter

Coralie Techer

In winter, the skin requires a completely different routine. To protect it from the cold and external aggressions effectively, we adopt the right actions.

Tight skin, dry skin, redness... No matter our skin type, in winter our skin barrier is put to the test and suffers from many ailments. It necessarily requires more care than usual. After the heat of summer (see the perfect summer beauty routine ) and the humidity of fall, the dry and cool air of winter requires some routine adjustments. Intense hydration, comforting textures and formulas that nourish our skin. We have to admit, the world of beauty has everything you need for pampered skin in winter.

Why should you adapt your beauty routine according to the seasons?

It is important to understand that it is important to adapt your beauty routine to the seasons because the needs of our skin change depending on the weather conditions. Variations in temperature, humidity, wind, sun, rain and even our diet can affect the health and appearance of our skin, hair and nails.

For example, in winter, skin may be drier and need more intensive hydration to combat the cold and wind. In summer, skin tends to be oilier and need higher sun protection to prevent UV damage. In spring and autumn, skin may experience more subtle changes, such as variations in texture or colour, which also require an adaptation of the beauty routine...

Additionally, skincare and makeup products are often formulated with seasonal ingredients to address skin’s needs at different times of the year. For example, hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid may be more commonly used in skincare products in the winter, while mattifying ingredients like rice powder may be more commonly used in makeup products in the summer. All of these little variations and details prove that it’s important, if not necessary, to adapt your beauty routine to the seasons to maintain healthy, beautiful skin, hair, and nails all year long.

Good beauty habits to adopt in winter

Just like the mind, in winter the skin seeks comfort ... Battered by the capricious weather, the wind and dry air quickly dry it out and make it dull. Moisturizing creams, food supplements, specific care ... Here are some beauty tips to adopt for beautiful skin in winter:

Moisturize your skin, inside and out

On the cosmetic side, use a moisturizer based on vegetable oil, a balm or a rich butter (like mango butter or shea butter) to bring comfort to your skin and protect it from the elements. For the face, prefer formulations based on hyaluronic acid for deep skin hydration and vitamin C to bring radiance, both in terms of cream and face serum or eye contour serum. Don't forget to drink water, herbal teas, tea, anything that can supplement your necessary water intake per day. Hydration also comes from food, by eating green vegetables, juicy fruits, or by enjoying good seasonal soups.

Protect your skin with sunscreen

In winter, the sun's UV rays can be just as strong as in summer. And even when we can't see it, the sun hidden behind the clouds is still acting on our skin. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (UVA and UVB) every day, for the body but especially for the face (an area that is particularly exposed in winter) to protect your skin from sun damage such as premature skin aging, pigment spots and other more or less serious problems.

Avoid water that is too hot

It's cold, of course, and you might be tempted to bask in hot water for hours. However, you should avoid hot showers, which can dry out your skin. Opt for lukewarm water and limit the time you spend in the shower; it's good for your skin and the planet.

Exfoliate once a week

For radiant skin, use a gentle scrub at least once a week. Scrubbing removes dead cells and skin from the surface of the skin barrier, boosts cell renewal and significantly improves its texture for healthy, soft and luminous skin even in winter.

Taking care of your lips

Lips also deserve to be taken care of in winter, especially since it is the most difficult season for them, which suffer from dryness, chapping and other minor problems. A moisturizing lip balm during the day, a scrub once a week and a special night mask for lips to apply before bedtime to deeply moisturize the lips!

Avoid irritating fabrics

In winter, the skin is constantly stressed by the fabrics it wears. It is better to favor noble and natural materials (as much as possible) that will not irritate the already sensitive skin and will help to preserve the skin's protective barrier.
