How to dye your eyebrows with henna

How to dye your eyebrows with henna

Coralie Techer

Eyebrow tinting is a common practice to fill out a sparse line, mark the eyebrows or simply perfect a restructuring. Henna is a natural and accessible solution! How to use it? We tell you everything.

The fashion is for marked, clean and full eyebrows. If semi-permanent makeup methods are in full swing, eyebrow restructuring and tinting are too! Regarding this last category, there are several solutions to achieve the desired result and say goodbye to sparse, too light or white eyebrows. Tinting can be done professionally in a salon, but their advantage is that they can also be applied at home and naturally thanks to henna... Perfect eyebrows are yours!

As a reminder, henna is a plant whose leaves are crushed to obtain a completely natural coloring powder. It is this powder that is used for henna tattoos, hair coloring and also for eyebrow dyes. It is an excellent alternative for those who suffer from allergies to the chemicals in classic dyes or those who simply want to stick to a natural routine. Unlike classic dyeing, henna also acts as a treatment, its natural origin helps, among other things, with hair regrowth. For even more beautiful eyebrows, you can still apply eyebrow serum .

What are the different steps to follow for henna eyebrow tinting?

Traditional henna dyeing is usually done at home (this is its advantage), it is not difficult to apply but requires a certain dexterity because henna quickly marks the skin and a crooked stain can quickly ruin the whole desired effect. To have pretty eyebrows, certain steps must be followed:

1 - Pluck your eyebrows properly to prepare the area

For henna to be successful, it must be applied to a clean and prepared eyebrow arch. Before applying it, make sure to carefully pluck your eyebrows. This way, you draw a clean and precise line that will precisely define the dyeing area!

2 - Choose the right dye color

There are several possible colors with henna (all in natural tones, nothing extravagant). Before dyeing your eyebrows, it is therefore advisable to choose the color that best suits your skin tone. Avoid big differences, a red henna will look very bad if you have black hair for example... In general, it is advisable to choose your exact color or a tone above. But everyone is free to do as they wish!

3 - How to prepare your homemade dye?

Nothing too complicated. Henna eyebrow dyes are generally sold in kits and contain all the necessary equipment for the proper preparation of the coloring. So always make sure to get a complete kit! The dye can be prepared with a rose water base for more sensoriality but especially to allow the henna to better adhere to the hair. Mix the powder until the powder is completely dissolved and a creamy paste is obtained. It's ready!

4 - How to properly apply henna dye?

This is where things can get tricky... You have to be vigilant and meticulous in order to apply the henna without spilling over! Moreover, to avoid unwelcome stains, you can apply a glue (hypoallergenic) around your eyebrows; if the henna goes over, it will settle on the glue, which can be easily removed later. To apply the henna, it is best to do it with a brush (angular for more control), which will allow you to delicately draw the hairs for the desired thickness. It is recommended to let the dye act for 10 to 15 minutes; beyond that, it may be too dark.

5 - How to remove excess henna after dyeing?

Once the application time has elapsed, you need to remove the excess henna paste from your eyebrows. This is also a delicate operation because you need to avoid getting it everywhere. First, use a dry cotton swab to precisely remove any excess, then use a cotton pad soaked in water to clean the area.

How to maintain your dye?

Now that the dye is applied and the eyebrows are perfect again, you have to maintain this result so that it does not deteriorate. Maintaining eyebrows colored with henna is rather simple. After applying the henna and once the excess has been removed, it is advisable to avoid wetting the eyebrows (even if the henna marks quickly, it is better to take no risks) for around 12 hours. So avoid unexpected swimming! Afterwards and beyond the first few days, to keep your dye as beautiful and marked as possible, be careful not to use products that are too stripping, such as coarse-grained scrubs. We also try to use foamy cleansers rather than oil-based ones that could lighten the henna or even make it disappear! Apart from these small details, henna coloring is rather easy to live with. It just needs to be renewed every six weeks, unlike permanent makeup intended to last for years.
