Complete guide to taking care of curly hair

Coralie Techer

Natural curly hair requires a suitable care routine and precise techniques to reach its full potential. Discover our complete guide to caring for it.

Hair curliness is mainly attributed to the structure of the hair shaft and the shape of the hair follicles. When hair follicles are oval or asymmetrical, the hair naturally curves as it grows. This curvature causes very tight curls to form, giving the hair its curly appearance. Curly hair needs specific care because it tends to be more prone to frizz, dryness, and breakage. Suitable styling techniques and products can help maintain moisture and control frizz.

What is the difference between curly hair and coily hair?

The difference is subtle because, in everyday language, the term "coily hair" is often used to cover the entire range of curly hair, when it should be the other way around. Coily hair is a type of curl! There are different types of curly hair, classified according to the curl pattern classification popularized by hairstylist Andre Walker. Curly hair types thus range from 2A to 4C, from loose curls to very tight curls (which are considered coily) and kinks.

The characteristic difference between coily hair and curly hair lies mainly in the shape and size of the curls.

Coily hair: Coily hair features tighter and narrower curls. These curls can be spiral-shaped or zigzag-shaped and are often smaller in diameter. Coily hair tends to form very tight curls throughout the hair.

Curly hair: Curly hair, on the other hand, has wider and looser curls. These curls can look like soft waves or looser curls. Curly hair can have a texture that is less tight than coily hair, but more pronounced than wavy hair.

It is important to note that the classification of hair as coily, curly, or wavy is not fixed and that there is a wide variety of hair textures that can fall between these categories. Everyone's hair is unique, and there can be different combinations of textures on the same head, so the best thing to do is consult a professional to get personalized advice and adapt your routine as effectively as possible!

The essentials of care for coily hair

Caring for coily hair requires specific care to maintain moisture, minimize frizz, and prevent breakage. Here are some tips for caring for your coily curls:

Maintain moisture

Coily hair tends to be drier because the natural oils from the scalp have difficulty reaching the ends due to the tight curls. Use moisturizing hair products such as sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners, or natural and homemade treatments, to avoid drying out your hair. Importantly, use deep moisturizing hair masks regularly to restore moisture.

Switch to co-washing

Co-washing, which involves washing your hair with a conditioner without using shampoo, can be beneficial for coily hair because it preserves the hair's natural moisture while gently cleansing the strands and scalp.

Avoid harsh products

Avoid hair products containing sulfates, silicones, and drying alcohols, as they can worsen dryness and frizz.

Always detangle gently

Use a wide-tooth comb or, preferably, your fingers to gently detangle your hair when it is wet and saturated with hair care products. Start at the ends and gradually work your way up to the roots to prevent breakage.

How to style

Avoid brushing or combing your dry hair, as this can cause frizz and destroy curl definition. Use your fingers to style and define your curls when your hair is wet, or use a wide-tooth comb if necessary.

How to dry

Avoid using rough cotton towels to dry your hair, as they can cause frizz. Instead, opt for a microfiber towel or a soft cotton T-shirt to absorb excess water by gently patting your hair. You can also let your hair air-dry as much as possible.

Choose the right styling products

Use styling products suitable for coily hair, such as gels, styling creams, hair serums, or mousses specifically designed to define and hold curls. Apply the products evenly to your wet hair for better curl definition.

Protect your hair at night

Wrap your hair in a satin scarf or use a satin pillowcase to prevent rubbing and friction that could cause frizz and damage.

Cut regularly

To prevent split ends and breakage, have your hair cut regularly by a hairdresser who knows coily hair well.
