Tips for curled lashes without an eyelash curler

Coralie Techer

For a lifted and enhanced look, nothing beats curled lashes. But what if you don't have an eyelash curler handy or simply aren't keen on using one? We'll tell you everything.

Let's be honest, long and curled lashes make all the difference. They instantly brighten up tired eyes, enliven and illuminate a dull complexion... and boost your confidence in just a few blinks! Naturally, you'll quickly get used to them and want that same result every morning when you wake up. Unfortunately, not everyone is born with Bambi lashes. Fortunately, the beauty world has plenty of tricks and accessories to help, and that's where the famous eyelash curler comes in. Seen as a lifesaver by some and a torture device by others, it doesn't always win everyone over. It's understandable, using an eyelash curler requires dexterity and know-how to avoid pinching your eyelid or, even worse, breaking your lashes! In such cases, it's easy to put it away for good, so you'll need to find an equally effective alternative...

Different techniques for curling your lashes without an eyelash curler

Being afraid of eyelash curlers isn't the end of the world; you can always turn to another alternative to get the lashes of your dreams. These tricks aren't very well known, yet they can work wonders if you take the time to learn how to use them properly.

Using a spoon to curl your lashes

  • You'll need: a small spoon and hot water.

It may sound strange, but a teaspoon (which we all have at home) can do the trick when it comes to curling lashes. How exactly does it work? First, choose a small spoon that fits the size of your eye perfectly (teaspoons or coffee spoons work very well) and dip it in very hot, but not scalding, water, as the back of the spoon will need to be placed on your eyelid at the base of your upper lashes. Press your lashes against the back of the spoon for about ten seconds, then repeat the process for each eye. The heat helps the hair settle into place; it's the same principle as blow-drying your hair. Apply your eyeshadow, then add a layer of mascara to set everything in place for the day.

The mascara brush technique for curling your lashes

Mascara brushes are often designed to maximize product application and help curl your lashes. However, you should know that too much mascara and improper brush use can have the opposite effect... To get beautifully curled lashes, you should first avoid overdoing it. Nothing makes lashes heavier and causes them to droop, giving you a closed-eyed look. How should you apply mascara properly? First, remove any excess product from the brush, then apply your mascara in light zigzag motions along the lash line. Avoid starting at the base of the lashes, as this can weigh them down; instead, focus more on the tips. This will make them look longer and enhance their curl. Finally, add an extra touch of mascara to the outer corners of your lashes to lengthen them—this technique helps open up your eyes even more!

Curling your lashes with a cotton bud

To set your lashes in a beautiful curl, you can also use a cotton bud. To start, apply your usual mascara (following the tips above), then press your lashes upwards using the stem of the cotton bud. Leave them pressed this way for about ten seconds to allow the mascara to dry in place. Once dry, its shaping effect will help your lashes hold this position. It's a backup technique that isn't as effective as the spoon, but it can still come in handy!

Choosing a professional lash lift

This is probably the easiest and most effective solution, even if it does cost something. A lash lift is THE miracle solution for those looking for curled lashes without the hassle. How does it work? Performed in a salon, a lash lift involves applying a product that sets the lashes in the desired curl. The treatment takes about 40–50 minutes and lasts 3 to 4 weeks. With a lash lift, mascara and an eyelash curler are no longer necessary, although you can always treat yourself and add an extra touch of drama by applying your usual mascara to your ultra-intense lashes. A lash lift also doesn't prevent you from continuing your usual skincare routine; you can still apply your eye contour care and even take advantage of it to give your lashes a little growth boost with a special lash serum. The surest way to get long, natural-looking lashes!
