Complexion makeup: everything you need to know for a pretty glow

Complexion makeup: everything you need to know for a pretty glow

Coralie Techer

A luminous complexion is in fashion. Summer and winter alike, we dream of satiny, shiny skin free of all imperfections. We have listed all the good tips for a complexion makeup with a dream glow!

Preparing your skin for makeup

Without a nice base, nothing works. When makeup is applied to problem skin, it tends to accentuate the appearance of imperfections and especially to call for new ones. Absolutely everything we don't want. So before any beauty treatment, we make sure to prepare our skin in several precise steps:

  • Cleansing your face : cleansing is step number 1. Even if the face seems clean, it is essential to get rid of the micro-dust accumulated either during the night or during the day. So before any beauty treatment, gently clean it with clear water and soap (preferably neutral and specially designed for the face).
  • Tone your skin: after cleansing, make sure to tone your skin so that it can stay fresh and vibrant all day long. Nothing beats a good squeeze of floral water to wake it all up. Cornflower and witch hazel floral water are excellent for toned skin that is free of imperfections, since they have a recognized antibacterial action.
  • Apply a serum: to prepare the skin in depth, apply a serum that will settle into the deep layers of the epidermis to nourish it and make it sufficiently permeable to makeup. Use your usual serum, apply it with circular massages to properly impregnate the material. The serum will unify and smooth the skin to prepare it for the rest of the beauty treatment.
  • Apply your day cream: after the serum, comes the day cream. The latter acts as protection for the first layer of the epidermis, which it will doubly hydrate and nourish abundantly. We choose it according to our needs, anti-wrinkle, anti-blemish, plumping, etc. For the application, be careful not to neglect any area of the face, and we apply it just like the serum by delicate circular massages.
  • Pamper the eye contour: let's admit it, we rarely think about it. The eye contour is such a fragile area of the face! It's the one we should pamper first. After applying serum and day cream, make sure not to skip the eye contour step. With a suitable cream or serum, lightly pat the contour to soak in the material. Always from the outer corner of the eye to its inner corner.
  • Applying your sunscreen: another step that often falls by the wayside. However, sunscreen should have its place of honor in our beauty routine! There are now some specially designed for the face, which do not leave a greasy or white finish. Easy to spread, they easily soak into the skin and can even act as a primer! Why is protecting your skin from the sun important? Despite the previous steps, the epidermis remains fragile when faced with UV rays, it absolutely needs to be protected in order to avoid premature aging, the formation of pigment spots or even much more serious problems.
  • Apply a primer: if you want to make sure that the skin is really ready and smooth enough to receive makeup then you can opt for a primer.

Applying makeup to your complexion in stages

Just like skin preparation, complexion makeup requires a little precise organization. Once the skin is completely ready to receive these tricks, we start applying our concealer to the small imperfections.

Next comes the foundation. To avoid the plaster or cakey effect as beautystas like to call it, we make sure not to overdo the amount of material. The foundation must be light and fluid (we do not choose maximum coverage for example). Tinted creams, BB or CC creams can totally do the trick! We apply the foundation with a beauty blender, a flat brush or even with our fingers. We do it according to our preferences and especially with the method that suits us best.

Once the foundation is evenly smoothed over the face, make sure to camouflage small imperfections such as dark circles with a concealer of the same color or even a shade below your skin tone. A fluid format will be ideal to spread without a material effect.

Mastering your glow

Now that the complexion is fresh, smooth and totally ready to shine, we add that little extra touch, in order to achieve the perfect glow. We focus above all on coherent materials like a creamy highlighter or a really very light powder format.

Highlighter is applied to the areas you want to highlight, such as the top of the cheekbones, the tip of the nose, the forehead or the chin. It is applied in very small doses, in order to accentuate the glow effect without looking like a disco ball.

Once this step is over, we add a touch of glossy blush in a creamy format, which we will spread on the cheekbones. This step is important because it is what lifts the complexion and allows that natural glow effect that we are all looking for.

A gourmet but discreet mouth

To complete this perfect complexion makeup, add a glossy touch to your lips to enhance the whole thing, without erasing the natural effect of this timeless makeup.

We opt for discreet colors like old pink, a pale red, a creamy orange. We favor wet materials like gloss, oil or lip balm. A matte lip ink would completely ruin the glow effect.

A light and sparkling look

Just like for the smile, we do not overdo the eye makeup. A little mascara to lengthen, shape and curl the eyelashes will be enough to enlarge the look and accentuate its sparkling beauty. If we are really a fan of eyeshadow, we can opt for nude or warm tones in creamy and slightly iridescent materials, so that they blend ideally on the skin.

Be careful, don't forget your eyebrows. Apply a little makeup to give consistency to the line, then fix them with a fixing gel for a browlift effect and an awakened look!

We finish with the final touch: the setting mist and there you have a totally glowy complexion makeup ready to last until the end of the night (or almost).
