Meeting with Pauline Volpe, creator and founder of the Voline Paris brand

Meeting with Pauline Volpe, creator and founder of the Voline Paris brand

Coralie Techer

Launched in July 2019, the Voline Paris brand is a high-end leather goods brand that combines the know-how of French craftsmanship and the subtlety of art. Sharp and unique models, worn high by a business woman, taste and character.

ROSEBLOG - Hello Pauline, you are the creator of Voline Paris, can you introduce yourself in a few words to the readers?

Pauline Volpe - I am Pauline, creator of the high-end leather goods brand Voline Paris . I come from a family of artisans, I grew up surrounded by beautiful materials and leatherwork... However, I didn't originally go into this field! I studied art, then worked as a press officer for the Grand Palais for five years. This return to craftsmanship and the creation of Voline didn't happen overnight, it was the culmination of a journey for me.

ROSEBLOG - How was Voline born? Have you always wanted to create your own leather goods brand? Why this name?

Pauline Volpe - Voline was born as an obvious choice, with her I somehow combine two facets of my life, of my personality, namely: the link between craftsmanship and my roots, and all my passion for art exploited with my first profession. I was keen to offer products that could bring out all the talent and know-how of French craftsmanship in leather goods. As for the name, it is simply the contraction of my name Volpe and my first name Pauline.

ROSEBLOG- Voline models are unique, what were your inspirations in the design of your accessories?

Pauline Volpe - With Voline I want to bring together pure art and craftsmanship, in the sense that the object itself is a work! A work that highlights the finesse and quality of the work of our craftsmen. As for the design, I wanted something quite new, striking... So I started with a first original model by choosing the square shape. The square is a shape that is rarely used in leather goods, because it is difficult to handle. It requires a lot of work and calculations in order to find the right dimensions and offer the best possible balance to the piece.

ROSEBLOG - How long does it take to design a Voline bag?

Pauline Volpe - This search for shapes, drawings, calculations can sometimes take a few weeks but also several months! Once the drawing is finished, we move on to the development part and the craft work. I work with two workshops, one in Paris and the other in Tours. We first make a model, then one or more prototypes, we make a series lead, we work on the materials, the metalwork, we change the measurements, we review the model... There are many, many steps before arriving at the finished and marketed product. On my first bags I worked for two years before having a perfect product!

ROSEBLOG - Voline defines itself as a committed and responsible brand, how and why?

Pauline Volpe - My main commitment is French craftsmanship. As I said, in France we have incredible know-how that must be preserved. I wanted to make this knowledge accessible by offering luxury products at fair prices. I like the fact of producing in France and having a short circuit production by sourcing in Europe, like in Italy for example (which also limits the carbon footprint of the brand). I did not want to export materials and accessories from the other side of the world. For me it makes no sense to make beautiful objects that are not made in a beautiful way. We buy, of course we put a price but we have quality and above all a bag that lasts for decades. This is the main commitment of the brand!

ROSEBLOG - Your favorite Voline model? And why?

Pauline Volpe - It's very complicated for me to answer this question... For a long time it was the Merveilleux which was my very first model. I wore it for years, but since last summer it's the l' Effronté model that I never take off. I can't really choose anymore, not to mention that a new model has just arrived (the l' Audacieuse clutch), which is modular as desired and that I wear more and more... I can't like one more than the other, it's like my children!

ROSEBLOG - Have you encountered any difficulties as a female entrepreneur in launching your own business? What advice would you give to women who want to start their own business?

Pauline Volpe - It's a long job, the Covid crisis hasn't helped things but it's a job that pays off when you show perseverance! The feedback is very good, little by little the brand is making its way. The life of an entrepreneur (man or woman) is nothing but difficulties... You always have to move forward and find solutions to difficulties. For me, being a female entrepreneur is far from easy. When I started training in fashion design to be able to design my bags, my son was four months old. I worked 80 hours a week, it was hard. Many people told me "thank goodness your partner is there to help you". A speech that I didn't really appreciate, because if the roles were reversed no one would have made that remark to my partner! I don't see why a mother should deprive herself of fulfilling herself under the pretext that she has just had a child. The way others look at my condition as a female entrepreneur and mother has been hard. To be an entrepreneur, you have to be a little ball. Always be able to bounce back, for me it's like motherhood, you shouldn't make people believe that it's easy! It's difficult for everyone, and that's normal.

ROSEBLOG - Apart from the online shop, can we find Voline creations for sale in other spaces?

Pauline Volpe - I also resell in Chartres, Blois and in a pop-up store in Brussels. I would very much like to consider a permanent store and obviously multiply them as much as possible!

ROSEBLOG and Le Point Beauté - The pace of life of a business leader must be quite hectic, how do you find time for yourself? What are your wellness rituals when you can finally relax?

Pauline Volpe - For me, it's essential to take time for myself. I need to feel good. Even in the first moments of motherhood, I took the time to take a shower, to put on makeup. I can't leave the house without at least some mascara! It's important for me to take this time for myself. The ritual that I've always done is to clean my face morning and evening. I could never go to bed without removing my makeup or start my day without washing my face.
