How to care for sensitive skin

How to care for sensitive skin

Coralie Techer

Each skin type has its own specific characteristics. Sensitive skin requires special care. We tell you everything you need to know to pamper them.

How to recognize the signs of sensitive skin?

Unlike normal skin, sensitive skin reacts excessively or abnormally to external or internal stimuli... Its tolerance threshold is extremely low, and it can easily become irritated, reddened, itchy, burnt or prickled. People with sensitive skin are more prone to dry, reactive or oily skin. Acne, allergies and rashes of all kinds can be their daily lot. The causes of this sensitivity are diverse, and include genetic factors, hormonal changes, allergic reactions, the use of aggressive cosmetics or unsuitable skin care products, excessive exposure to the sun or extreme climatic conditions!

It's important to treat reactive skin gently, avoiding irritating products and using gentle skin care products specially formulated for this type of skin to avoid sensations of discomfort. Products containing natural ingredients such as colloidal oatmeal, sweet almond oil or argan oil are highly beneficial for soothing and protecting sensitive skin types. If this sounds like you, we recommend that you consult a dermatologist, who can suggest a lifestyle routine tailored to the sensitivity of your skin barrier.

Factors that can influence skin sensitivity

Skin sensitivity (and therefore skin discomfort) can be influenced by a number of factors. It's important to point them out to counteract external aggressions.

  • Genetic factors. Skin sensitivity can run in the family. People with a family history of sensitive skin may be more likely to develop sensitive skin.
  • Hormonal changes. Hormonal fluctuations can affect the skin and cause increased sensitivity. For example, women may experience more sensitive skin during menstruation, pregnancy or menopause.
  • Allergies. Allergic reactions to products, ingredients or environmental allergens can cause skin irritation and sensitivity.
  • The environment. Environmental conditions such as sun, wind, cold, pollution, and humidity can affect the skin and make it more sensitive.
  • Skin care products. The use of aggressive skin care products containing irritating or allergenic ingredients can cause skin sensitivity.
  • Stress. Emotional and physical stress can affect skin health and cause increased sensitivity.

What beauty routine should you adopt for sensitive skin?

When you have sensitive skin, it's important to follow a gentle, tailored skin care routine to minimize irritation and prevent skin reactions. Here are a few tips to remember and apply to ensure a skin care routine adapted to sensitive skin.

Le nettoyage de la peau, tout en douceur.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic cleanser that doesn't contain irritating ingredients like alcohol, sulfate or essential oils. Avoid abrasive or exfoliating cleansers, which can aggravate skin sensitivity.

Daily moisturizing of the skin.

As with the cleanser, use a light, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer specially formulated for sensitive skin. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, glycerine, avocado oil and rose hip oil, with their soothing active ingredients, help to soothe and deeply moisturize sensitive skin. And don't forget to drink plenty of water to hydrate your body from the inside out. It's the ultimate beauty secret!

Use sun protection.

Sensitive skin is more likely than combination or normal skin to react to sun exposure. It's important to use a fragrance-free SPF 50 sunscreen specially formulated for sensitive skin.

Avoid skin-irritating products.

Avoid skin care products containing irritating ingredients such as perfumes, dyes, sulfates and alcohol. Also avoid those containing acids such as salicylic acid or glycolic acid, which are a little too aggressive for the heightened sensitivity of your protective barrier...

Can make-up be applied to sensitive skin?

The answer is yes! But it's important to take every precaution to avoid allergies (sensitive skin is very prone to allergies), irritation and other unwelcome skin rashes. The choice of make-up products should be made with a clear conscience, and the list of ingredients should always be deciphered to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Choose gentle make-up products specially formulated for sensitive skin. Organic and Vegan brands are generally ideal for sensitive skin.

Before applying foundation, tinted serum or blush powder to your face, be sure to do an allergy test. For example, place a small amount on the hollow of your arm (a sensitive and reactive area). If you observe a reaction, rinse immediately with soap and water and skip this product...

Always make sure you remove your make-up before going to bed. It's an essential step for all skin types, but even more so when you have sensitive skin (and the same goes for mature skin).

What are the ideal skincare products for sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin loves natural skin care. If this is your case, give yourself a moment of gentleness at least once a week by wrapping your face in a vegetable oil mask. Here are a few that are ideal for sensitive skin:

Sweet almond oil:rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E, it is soothing and moisturizing, which can help relieve dry, irritated skin.

Argan oil: rich in fatty acids and antioxidants, it can help soothe and protect sensitive skin.

Jojoba oil:very similar to the natural oil produced by the skin, it can help reduce irritation and moisturize sensitive skin.

Camellia oil: rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, it is very gentle and can help nourish and protect sensitive skin.

Calendula oil:obtained from marigold flowers, it is soothing and anti-inflammatory, which can help reduce irritation and inflammation of sensitive skin.

You can swap your day and night creams for a simple (cold-pressed) treatment oil. Oils are real nuggets for the care of sensitive skin, and can be paired with your eye contour serum without a problem.

The ultimate tip? As with your body, love your skin and let it know it. Treat it gently with tender gestures, opt for a healthy diet adapted to your needs, and massage it from time to time. Whether it's dry, oily, tight, acne-prone... simply be proud of it, of yourself. That's certainly the best beauty advice you can give and apply!
