The essential steps in a good skincare routine

The essential steps in a good skincare routine

Coralie Techer

The facial routine is probably the most important part of our beauty ritual. What are the essential steps to follow to make sure you stick to it? We tell you.

Make-up removal is essential!

For radiant skin and to prevent the appearance of imperfections, make-up removal is part of the daily beauty routine. This ultra-important gesture should never be missed! It frees our skin from the dirt it has accumulated over the day, and of course removes make-up to let the epidermis breathe and allow cells to renew themselves. This hygienic gesture ensures refined skin texture, frees pores, eliminates dead cells, and prevents excess sebum, impurities and the early wrinkles of damaged skin...

Also read our guide to Yoga Du Visage for perfect facial contours and skin! These exercises can be added to a good cleansing routine, for example.

Choose your make-up remover according to your skin type:

There are many different types of make-up remover, so it's easy to get confused! To give yourself the best chance of beautiful skin, choose the make-up remover best suited to your skin type:

  • Micellar water is designed for all skin types, but not for mature skin! It's perfect for removing all impurities, but tends to dry out the skin.
  • The cleansing milk is perfect for dry, sensitive skin. It removes make-up in depth, gently moisturizing and nourishing the skin.
  • Cleansing oil. Ideal for removing stubborn makeup, it quickly dissolves pigments. Makeup remover oil can be a simple vegetable oil that is also excellent for nourishing the skin, and is applied with the finger using circular movements.
  • Cream cleansers are suitable for intolerant and reactive skin, as they are less stripping and gently cleanse the skin.
  • Cleansing gel for oily and combination skin. This skin type requires a two-step cleansing process: first, use a gentle oil cleanser, then wash the face with a gel cleanser to remove make-up residue and excess oil.

How do you really cleanse your skin?

Unlike the rest of the body, facial skin is constantly exposed to external aggressors such as dust, sunlight, pollution, cosmetics and more. It's quite funny when you consider that it's also the most fragile skin on the human body! In order to recover from these external aggressions, facial skin requires a very special and meticulous beauty ritual.

How can I always cleanse my skin properly? The first thing to do is wash your face with a cleansing gel suited to your skin type. If you have dry skin, use a gentle cleanser that's not greasy. Ideally, a neutral soap is a good base for all skin types. When you're used to wearing makeup, always double-cleanse, as some makeup products (such as mascara or foundation) can be really stubborn! The trick to making sure your makeup is completely removed? Dry your face with a white towel.

To complete the cleansing process, we mist the skin with thermal spring water or floral water . Using a cotton pad, we impregnate the water and wipe away any remaining dirt residue, but above all, we tighten pores and tone tissues. In fact, even after removing make-up from the face, we're not spared from residues invisible to the naked eye. Thermal spring water has the advantage of moisturizing, gently cleansing and penetrating the skin, while respecting the face's natural cutaneous barrier.

How can I keep my skin well moisturized?

Moisturization is essential, both for the skin and for the proper functioning of the body. From the inside, as from the outside, it should not be taken lightly. Several studies have already shown that people who don't moisturize their skin on a daily basis develop wrinkles earlier than those who do... While proper hydration involves the application of products such as moisturizers and various skincare products like eye serums, it also involves good nutrition. The quality of what we ingest is important, and drinking water regularly throughout the day (at least 1L minimum) ensures a radiant complexion, smooth skin texture, plumped skin, reduced dark circles and perfectly elastic tissues!

Here's a list of foods you can choose for beautiful, hydrated skin:

Lipids for beautiful skin

Fatty acids moisturize the skin and protect it from external aggression. The two main essential fatty acids to include in the diet are linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. Omega-3s are an integral part of cell membranes, necessary for skin hydration and elasticity. They also contribute to skin cell cohesion.

Where are they found? Lipids are mainly found in foods such as meat and fish, but also in dairy products, eggs, cold meats, avocados, olives, dried fruit, oils and margarines.

Fruits and vegetables

For a complete supply and nourished skin, it's essential to include fruit and vegetables in your diet. Preferably those rich in water! What's the point? To boost internal hydration, of course. Vegetables such as cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes and zucchini provide just the right amount of water. As for fruit, you can count on citrus fruits such as oranges, mandarins, peaches and nectarines, as well as more colorful fruits such as pineapple, watermelon, melon, papaya and strawberries.

Vitamin "E

Vitamin "E" is known for its antioxidant power. Its power is not new, since many of our ancient civilizations already used it extensively in their cosmetics! On our plates, we find it in green vegetables, nuts and seeds, as well as in certain fruits. Vitamin E combines a number of actions that are conducive to the well-being of the body and skin:

  • Anti-ageing

Vitamin E is the vitamin of youth. It stimulates the production of collagen, which is responsible for the skin's elasticity, and fights the free radicals responsible for hyperpigmentation and brown spots, thus combating skin ageing.

  • Repairer

Vitamin "E" has a regenerative superpower on skin tissue cells, hence its healing effect. Applied regularly to stretch marks, it helps reduce their appearance.

  • Nourishing

It is highly recommended for dry skin, given its moisturizing effect. It can be incorporated into your night cream for a luminous complexion.

Don't neglect the face serum

Creams and other cosmetic treatments such as lip balms, eyelash serums or anti-imperfections are obviously essential for a radiant, glowing complexion, but if there's one care product you shouldn't neglect, it's the serum! But you need to know how to choose the right one.

What is a serum used for?

A serum is a fluid, with a lighter texture than a cream. It acts deep down on skin cells and prepares the epidermis for better absorption of creams.

The serum can be used for all kinds of skin problems: dull complexion, spots, acne scars, lack of tone or elasticity...

How to choose it?

A serum for every problem! On the cosmetics market, there is a wide variety of serums, all of which correspond to a specific problem. Unlike facial creams, which are chosen according to skin type, serums are selected according to the imperfections you wish to treat. So we start by identifying the skin concerns that are bothering us, and then choose our serum.

How do I apply it?

Always apply serum to clean, dry skin to maximize its benefits. Take two drops of serum and warm them in your hands to activate the active ingredients. Then massage the serum in circular motions all over the face, avoiding the eye contour area, which has its own dedicated treatment. Massage not only enhances serum penetration, but also boosts blood circulation. The result is an improved complexion!
