8 DIY Body and Face Scrub Recipes

8 DIY Body and Face Scrub Recipes

Coralie Techer

Exfoliation is an essential step in your beauty routine. It removes dead cells and all kinds of dirt lodged on the surface layer of the epidermis. To do it naturally at home, we list 8 tried and tested recipes.

This is a gesture that could be described as essential. It is even the number one practice that we are taught when we finally reach the age where the beauty routine becomes part of our daily lives. Exfoliation consists of exfoliating (gently) the skin of the body and face. This mechanical step will remove the skin's dead cells as well as the dirt accumulated over time. To allow the epidermis to renew itself, keep a fresh, luminous complexion and soft skin, it is a necessary gesture.

Nowadays, there are all kinds of scrubs. In the aesthetic world (professionals) we even practice peeling which will chemically "burn" the superficial layer of the epidermis to allow it a total rebirth and refine the skin texture. A gesture that is preferably carried out by a professional. The scrub is more traditional, simpler and more practical to do yourself.

The principle?

The scrub is composed of a granular agent (salt, coffee grounds, sugar, etc.) that will scrape the surface layer of the skin and extract impurities! This treatment is ideally done once or twice a week to keep your complexion and skin looking great. The circular movements are especially gentle to avoid damaging the skin. Each skin type has its own exfoliant, to be sure of your diagnosis it is better to contact a professional, especially if you have sensitive or problem skin.

Why choose a homemade scrub?

Homemade scrubs are first and foremost economical. But above all, we know what they are made of. The good news is that we can easily make them with what we have in our cupboards!

Be careful with essential oils on the face, it is better to avoid adding them to your preparation if you have the slightest doubt.

Homemade facial scrubs

To regain radiance, smooth skin and a refined texture, nothing beats a facial scrub! Applicable once or twice a week depending on the texture and type of scrub, it is an essential step in your beauty routine. Vegetable oil, coffee grounds... all skin types have their favorite scrub.

Be careful, when applying a scrub to the face, you should avoid the eye area, it is a very fragile area. To not leave it aside and also take full care of your eyes, you can however apply an anti-dark circle and puffiness serum and an eyelash serum .

Almond scrub:

Almond is known for its nourishing effects on the skin. It is suitable for combination to dry skin.

  • Almond powder - 1 teaspoon
  • cold pressed sweet almond oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Hydrolat - of your choice

Mix the almond powder and sweet almond oil in a container. Apply the preparation to damp facial skin and massage in a circular motion to activate the scrubbing effect. Leave the almond oil soup on for a few minutes to enjoy the nutrients and benefits it provides. Rinse with clean water and finish with a few drops of hydrosol to firm and refresh the skin.

Coffee grounds scrub:

A basic that no longer needs to be introduced! Coffee activates blood circulation and gives a real boost to the complexion, a guaranteed beautiful skin effect. This scrub is suitable for oily and dull skin.

  • Coffee grounds - the bottom of a cup is enough
  • Honey - one teaspoon
  • Hydrolat - of your choice

Mix the coffee grounds and honey in a container. Place the preparation on the face. Leave on for a few minutes (be careful, the coffee grounds may sting slightly after a while), massage in circular motions to activate the scrub. Rinse with clean water and finish with a touch of hydrosol to firm the skin and refresh the complexion.

Oatmeal Scrub:

Oatmeal acts as a gentle exfoliant (great for sensitive skin) and has the ability to absorb excess sebum. It is very suitable for combination skin.

  • Oatmeal - 1 tbsp
  • Honey - 1 teaspoon
  • Yogurt - 1 teaspoon
  • Hydrolat - of your choice

In a container, mix everything until the preparation is well homogeneous, then apply with your finger to the entire face. As with each previous scrub, leave it on to allow the skin to benefit from the active ingredients of the scrub. Activate the scrub with gentle, circular movements to promote cell renewal. Rinse with clean water and finish with a touch of hydrosol of your choice.

Avocado scrub:

Avocado nourishes mature and tired skin and helps fight the signs of aging! It also acts as protection against external aggressions such as cold or wind. It is particularly suitable for dry skin.

  • Avocado - 2 teaspoons of avocado puree
  • Sugar - 1 teaspoon
  • Rose hydrosol - one dose

Mix all the ingredients (this time we add the hydrosol to the preparation because the rose will accentuate the anti-aging effect of the avocado). Gently massage the scrub on the face (the sugar and its fine grains allow a good exfoliation of sensitive skin). Rinse with clear water! You can add a dose of liquid honey for more softness.

Aloe Vera Scrub:

Aloe vera has no device to moisturize, cleanse and heal the skin. It is the ultimate ally of our beauty! It is suitable for all skin types.

  • Aloe vera - 1 tablespoon of gel (best to be able to scrape it directly from the plant after cutting a leaf).
  • Sugar - 2 teaspoons
  • Lemon juice - 1 teaspoon
  • Hydrolat - the one of your choice

Mix the preparation until you obtain a gelatinous paste ready to apply to the skin. Massage in circular motions to activate the scrubbing effect and allow the skin to benefit from the active ingredients (especially the balancing one in lemon juice). Rinse with clean water and finish with the hydrosol.

Homemade body scrubs

To get rid of dead skin and pollution residues that accumulate on the skin of the body, nothing beats a good scrub. Practicable with the fingertips or the hand, it can also be applied using a glove for even more effectiveness.

Argan Oil Scrub:

Argan oil nourishes the skin by leaving a hydroprotective film that retains water for optimal hydration. It is the ideal ingredient for a body scrub.

  • Cold pressed argan oil - two tablespoons
  • Sugar - 3 tablespoons
  • Honey - 1 teaspoon.

In a container, mix all the ingredients until you get a paste. With a body glove, gently apply the scrub all over your body, massaging in a circular motion (just like for the face) and gently to activate the effect of the scrub. Note that the scrub is also effective in reducing cellulite! Rinse with lukewarm water and finish with a vegetable oil such as coconut oil or a dry oil.

Papaya scrub:

Paya fights against the effects of time (thanks to its antioxidant action), regulates sebum and purifies the skin! As a body scrub, it ensures invigorated and healthy skin.

  • Papaya - blend half of it
  • Semolina - 3 tablespoons
  • Honey - 1 teaspoon

In a container, mix everything! Then apply the preparation to all the areas you want to exfoliate with your fingers or a body glove. The semolina replaces the sugar here, it gently exfoliates (is less abrasive than sugar) and therefore allows a scrub suitable for sensitive and problem skin. Rinse with lukewarm water and finish with a vegetable oil such as coconut oil or a dry oil.

Baking soda scrub:

Baking soda is a bit of a jack of all trades! It is as practical in everyday household chores as it is for hygiene. As a scrub, it is ideal for treating areas where the skin is thicker (feet, thighs, elbows or knees).

  • Baking soda - 2 tablespoons
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Honey - 1 tablespoon

Mix everything together and apply the preparation to the affected areas using a glove or simply your fingers. The bicarbonate will exfoliate deeply, the olive oil will nourish and the honey will soothe! A winning combo for a perfect body. Rinse with lukewarm water and finish with a vegetable oil such as coconut oil or a dry oil.

How to perfect your scrub?

After a homemade body scrub or homemade facial scrub, the skin needs comfort. Then apply a rich moisturizer or a gentle oil to the body, insisting to make the cream penetrate deeply and nourish the skin as much as possible. On the face, apply your usual routine, the facial serum is required, followed by your usual moisturizer! For even more effectiveness and to allow the active ingredients to activate, think about facial yoga . Doing your facial gym while applying your treatments is even better!
