Snail slime, all its benefits for the skin

Snail slime, all its benefits for the skin

Coralie Techer

It's not very glamorous and we certainly wouldn't consider it to take care of our beauty... And yet, snail slime works miracles for our skin! Zoom in on this gift from mother nature, too underestimated.

It may no longer be a secret to you; you have surely already heard about the incredible benefits that snail slime provides, both for the small gastropod and for us humans.

Snail slime, a major beauty ally

A few decades ago, snail slime subtly entered our beauty routines, and established itself as a must-have for treating skin problems but also for reducing stretch marks and scars. Indeed, this viscous trail secreted by the little shelled beast is said to have very powerful virtues for regenerating problem skin and offering beautiful skin!

This is not very surprising when you know that the snail itself uses its slime to repair its small injuries (including potential cracks in its shell).

But why? Snail slime contains many regenerating active ingredients such as: glycolic acid which strengthens cell renewal, vitamins E, A and C which have a powerful antioxidant effect. Collagen which softens the skin but above all elastin and allantoin in abundance for supple and strengthened skin.

What are the well-known benefits of snail slime?

To see things more clearly, it is good to list precisely all the benefits that snail slime can bring in cosmetics. Snail slime helps among other things to:

  • Healing (ideal for acne scars)
  • Skin repair
  • Regeneration
  • Anti-wrinkle prevention
  • boost shine
  • Strengthen the skin's protective barrier
  • Skin hydration
  • Improve the appearance of skin regardless of skin type
  • Soften the skin

The benefits are legion and if we study the thing in depth we can detect more! It is important to know that the benefits of this unsavory substance have been exploited for centuries in Asian and South American countries. In Chile for example, women use snail slime directly at the source, by placing the little one on their face and letting it do all the work... Obviously this practice is supervised and no harm is done to the snails.

In France, breeding farms exclusively dedicated to cosmetic cultivation have emerged. Snail slime is extracted in a healthy and respectful manner, this way it remains fresh and does not lose any of its active ingredients!

Snail slime, a valuable ingredient to fight acne

You have probably heard of snail slime to treat acne problems. It was even all the rage a few years ago. Obviously, this natural method is not intended for the most serious cases that require personalized medical monitoring. However, snail slime can be really useful when it comes to treating more or less superficial skin lesions.

Why is it so popular for treating skin problems like acne?

Due to its restorative, healing and regenerating capacities, snail mucus boosts cell renewal (and therefore the healing process) and allows skin lesions to heal more easily. With its high concentration of allantoin, snail slime cleanses the skin and creates an unwelcoming environment for the formation of pimples and other imperfections. It is this whole beneficial cocktail that makes it a great ingredient for anti-imperfection cosmetics. Obviously, snail slime will not completely eliminate acne; it is a supportive and preventative treatment that requires a certain amount of assiduity. But I promise, the results are very satisfactory!

Focus on Allantoin, the key active ingredient in snail slime

Allantoin is an organic or plant chemical compound, generally found in the amniotic fluid of mammals, in the urine of certain animals, and of course, in snail slime. Its properties are rich, softening, moisturizing, restorative, it also helps to maintain the hydrolipidic film for supple and soft skin. When it is highly concentrated, allantoin is used to treat aggravated skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and even burns and wounds!

On the active side, it helps to eliminate dead cells (dead skin) from the epidermis. It is this eliminating action that allows the skin to regain its softness. If it is so appreciated, it is because it is suitable for all skin types (ideal for dry skin) and therefore acts as a kind of universal treatment. There are no real contraindications to its use. In addition to its presence in snail slime, it can also be found as a solitary active ingredient in the form of powder to add to cosmetic preparations.

How to choose your snail slime routine?

To include snail slime in your routine, the choice is wide. Beauty brands are increasingly using this ingredient in the composition of their cosmetic products and we understand why.

Snail slime is found in the form of day and night cream for deeply nourished and hydrated skin throughout the day. We also like it as a serum, where its action will be more concentrated in order to penetrate the layers of the epidermis in depth and allow an improved skin texture. Serums are ideal for those looking for a boosted anti-aging effect. Increasingly, snail slime is making its way into everyday cosmetics such as micellar waters (for healthy and soft skin), in soaps or shampoos (for a well-groomed and healthy scalp).

In short, snail slime is an ingredient that takes care of us in general, a real must-have on your beauty shelf if it is not already the case... And to go further in your routine, you can combine the association of these treatments with facial yoga exercises or kobido massages and finish with a dose of lip balm for a complete facial treatment.
