Plumping blush: how does it work?

Plumping blush: how does it work?

Coralie Techer

We're already familiar with plumping lip gloss, which is particularly popular when you're looking to add (fleeting) volume to your lips. But what about plumping blush? How does it work, and what's the point of applying it? We take a look.

The world of make-up is constantly evolving, and among recent trends, plumping blush is emerging as an innovative technique for enhancing skin's natural radiance. But how does this new trend work, and what are its specific features? That's what we'll explain in this article.

What is a blush used for? Back to base

Before we understand how a blush can "plump up" cheekbones, we need to review the basics of its use. Blush is a make-up product that has been used for ages (the first record of its use in history dates back to ancient Egypt) to add a touch of color to the cheeks, giving a natural, healthy look to the complexion, but also to :

  1. Create a healthy look: By adding a touch of color to the cheeks, blush gives the illusion of healthy skin, with a natural, radiant glow.

  2. Define facial structure: blush can be used to shape and define facial contours, highlighting cheekbones and adding depth and dimension to the face. This option is all the more valuable with the latest fashionable techniques (such as sunkissed makeup), blush even replaces contouring.

  3. Correct imperfections: By lightly masking imperfections or redness, blush can help balance and even out skin tone.

  4. Completing your beauty routine: It's simply an integral part of a make-up routine to finalize the complexion with a touch of freshness.

Good to know: The term "blush" comes from English and literally means "to blush" or "blushing." It is originally associated with the natural flushing or coloring of the cheeks when someone feels self-conscious, shy, or embarrassed. Hence its use to name the makeup product used to tint the cheeks.

What is a plumping blush?

Plumping blush is an innovative make-up product that goes beyond simply coloring the cheeks. Unlike traditional blush, its main objective is to create a fuller, plumper effect on the cheekbones. This type of product is formulated with moisturizing active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or plumping ingredients. In addition to the color it provides, it aims to give a feeling of volume to the cheeks, similar to a temporary "lifting" or plumping effect, without the need for injections.

Can the plumping blush be used on all skin types?

Plumping blush is generally designed to suit most skin types. However, as with any cosmetic product, it is essential to take into account individual skin sensitivity and test the product on a small area before full application. For example, people with sensitive skin or those prone to allergic reactions should pay close attention to the ingredients contained in plumping blush. Certain ingredients or fragrances may cause irritation, redness or allergic reactions.

On the other hand, people with mature skin can appreciate the moisturizing and plumping benefits of this type of blush, as it helps to give a plumper look to the cheeks and moisturizes the skin as well. Of course, it's advisable to consult user reviews, check the ingredients list and perform a pre-test on a small area of skin to ensure the compatibility of the plumping blush with your skin type.

How do I apply a plumping blush?

Application of plumping blush may vary slightly depending on its texture (liquid, gel, cream) and the product's specific formulation. Here are some general steps for effective application:

  1. Preparation: Start with clean, moisturized skin. Make sure your base make-up, such as foundation or powder, is already applied if you're using any.

  2. Product selection: Select the plumping blush of your choice according to its texture (liquid, gel or cream) and desired shade.

  3. Application:

    • Liquid or gel blush: Use the applicator provided or your fingers to take a small amount of product and place it on the back of your hand to avoid excess directly on the face. Using a fluffy brush, delicately take the desired amount and apply to cheekbones, patting in.
    • Cream blush: Use your fingers or a suitable make-up brush to pick up a small amount of blush. Apply with light, circular movements to cheekbones.
  4. Blending: Using a clean brush or your clean fingers, gently blend the blush outwards to avoid demarcation lines and achieve a natural effect.

  5. Adjustment: If necessary, adjust the intensity by adding more product in small dabs.

  6. Finishing: Once the blush has been applied, you can finalize your make-up by lightly setting with a translucent powder to prolong its hold.

It's essential not to overload with product from the outset. It's best to start with a small amount and add gradually, depending on the desired effect. This method avoids product overload and ensures a more natural result.
