Dry hair: what to do about it?

Dry hair: what to do about it?

Coralie Techer

Hair, like skin, can also be dry. Is there anything we can do about it? The right routine can help.

To each his own skin type, to each his own hair type. Whether straight, curly or frizzy, hair can be dry, and if we can't totally change its nature, we can at least help it suffer less damage.

Differentiating between dry and damaged hair

It's easy to confuse dry hair with damaged hair. It has to be said that the symptoms are broadly the same, but one is an unchangeable nature, the other a cause that can easily be remedied.

Characteristics of dry hair

Dry hair is often fine, dehydrated and lacking in sebum. Signs of dry hair include split ends, frizz, roughness and loss of shine. Dry hair tends to be more fragile and break more easily, especially when wet. This is the nature of hair, and it can obviously be improved, but dry hair will always be dry.

Characteristics of damaged hair

Damaged hair has generally suffered physical damage such as breakage, tangles, bleaching, aggressive chemical treatments, or excessive use of styling products and heat. Damaged hair is generally brittle and dry, but can also be greasy at the roots and dry at the ends. Damaged hair tends to break easily and can appear dull and lifeless.

In short, if hair shows signs of dryness, it's probably dry. On the other hand, if it shows signs of physical damage, it's probably damaged. However, it's quite possible for hair to be both dry and damaged, in which case you need to use the right products to moisturize and repair it!

What care routine should you adopt for dry hair?

Dry hair requires special care and attention. From styling products to hair care products, it's essential to adapt your products to your hair type to keep it looking beautiful.

Here are the best ways to care for dry hair:

  1. Wash hair with a moisturizing, nourishing shampoo that contains no sulfates or parabens, to avoid further drying. When it comes to active ingredients, we recommend shampoos containing vegetable oils, shea butter, sweet almond oil... Hair should be washed at intervals to allow it to breathe and renew itself. Ideally, hair should be washed once a week!

  2. Use an ultra-moisturizing conditioner or mask to boost, protect and deeply nourish dry hair. You can also use leave-in care products for extra hydration.

  3. Avoid heated styling tools such as straightening irons and curling irons, which can dry out hair. If you must use a heated tool, always apply a thermoprotective treatment to minimize damage.

  4. Forget brushing hair when it's wet, as it's more fragile then. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle dry hair.

  5. Use nourishing hair oils to moisturize and protect hair. Argan, coconut and avocado oils are excellent for dry manes... You can also opt for hair serums to nourish the bulb and boost hair growth, or hyaluronic acid serums to moisturize lengths.

  6. For beautiful hair, protect it from the sun by wearing a hat or using a UV/UVB protective spray. Don't hesitate to spray the protector all over the hair, paying particular attention to the ends, which often suffer more from dryness.

  7. Avoid overly tight hairstyles such as buns, plaited braids and high ponytails, which can cause damage and breakage to the already fragile fiber of dry hair.

  8. For even greater effectiveness, you can have your hair treated with keratin at an institute. This effective deep-cleansing treatment provides hair with all the nutrients it needs for a fresh start.

How can I protect my dry hair every day?

To protect dry hair on a daily basis, all it takes is the right little hair routine. In addition to all the points mentioned above, dry hair requires patience, regularity and attention!

A delicate washing routine

When you have fine, dry, fragile hair, you need to adopt a delicate, diligent washing routine. For example, we avoid the use of aggressive shampoos and always apply a conditioner or hair mask to restore strength and vigor to the hair fiber. For beautiful hair, don't hesitate to turn to totally natural formulations such as shampoos with Ayurvedic powders (particularly moisturizing and nourishing) or solid shampoos and treatments. When it's time to dry, avoid rubbing the towel over your hair! We prefer the gentle use of a microfiber towel, which we gently dab onto the area.

The right styling routine

Whether straight or curly, dry hair should not be brushed frequently, and especially not vigorously. We prefer to use a wide-toothed wooden comb to prevent frizz, but above all to avoid breaking and shocking the already fragile strands.

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase

It's the practical tip for all hair types, but especially for dry, fragile hair. Silk pillowcases not only keep bacteria off the skin, but also take care of hair's softness, avoiding creasing and accelerating hair loss!

An oil bath, once a week

An oil bath is an excellent way to care for your hair. Totally natural, this hair care treatment can be homemade by mixing a synergy of vegetable and essential oils suited to dry hair.

Homemade oil bath recipe for dry hair:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, coconut oil or sweet almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon castor oil (optional)
  • 5 drops lavender or ylang-ylang essential oil (optional)
  1. In a bowl, mix the vegetable oils of your choice. Add castor oil if using.
  2. If you are using essential oils, add them to the preparation and mix well.
  3. Warm the mixture slightly in a bain-marie or microwave. Make sure it's not too hot.
  4. Apply the mixture to dry hair, massaging gently into the scalp. Make sure you distribute the oil evenly from the roots to the ends.
  5. Cover your hair with a warm towel or shower cap. This will help the oils penetrate deep into the hair.
  6. Leave the oil bath on for at least 30 minutes, or even overnight for even better results.
  7. Rinse hair with a mild shampoo and lukewarm water. Repeat if necessary.

What to avoid at all costs when you have dry hair

In short, dry hair is not inevitable, and can be restored to softness and luminosity with the right care. To avoid ending up with dry, damaged hair, make sure you (absolutely) follow these instructions:

  • One wash a week. Always accompanied by moisturizing care products.
  • We don't comb our hair every day, and when we do, it's done gently with a wide-tooth wooden comb.
  • We sleep on a silk pillowcase that we change at least every three days.
  • Forget tight hairstyles!
  • We leave out aggressive coloring, which dries out the hair, making it brittle and accelerating hair loss...
  • Aggressive, hair-weighting products containing parabens, sulfates or collagen.
