Leg hair removal: our advice

Leg hair removal: our advice

Coralie Techer

If hair is increasingly loved and accepted, it's also normal to want to get rid of it for the summer. Here are our tips for easy hair removal.

When we go on vacation, we want to bubble and chill, without worrying about anything other than the freshness of our mojito. So it makes sense to look for the best way to remove unwanted hair before you pack your bags. While institutes offer rather attractive waxing packages, not everyone has the time or the means to run to them before heading off on vacation. The simplest solution is to do it yourself. At home, the solutions are legion: waxing, shaving, depilatory creams, electric epilators and other trends have all become travel essentials in the space of just a few years. As with eyebrow hair removal, the key is to find the method that's right for you.

The different hair removal techniques ideal for legs

Waxing

Hair removal involves removing the entire hair, including the bulb. This method can significantly slow hair regrowth and leaves us undisturbed for a few weeks. Hot waxing or cold waxing still requires equipment: a strip to apply the wax, something to heat it up, and something to prepare it with if it isn't already ready. It also takes time; you need to be able to sit down for at least half an hour to perfect your hair removal in every nook and cranny. Be careful, hot wax can be dangerous to handle, and there is a real risk of burns.

Shaving

is probably the quickest solution. But this practice has the big disadvantage of being suitable for a one-off situation. A trip to the pool? Shave, shave, shave. A dip in the sea? Hop shave... The operation has to be repeated over and over again. It can be a bit daunting, and it's not all you have to do on vacation. To limit the stress, shaving can be done with a shaving oil. Shaving oil prepares the skin, preventing irritation and minor cuts, and soothes the epidermis, which is nourished and hair-free. Shaving oils are totally natural and formulated to slow hair regrowth. A practical tool that can be carried absolutely anywhere in your bag, for those last-minute touch-ups.

Depilatory cream

A spatula, a spread of cream and hair is magically removed. How does depilatory cream work? It's less long-lasting than wax, but more effective than a razor. The alkaline active ingredients it contains destroy hair right down to its roots, attacking the keratin directly. The process can be frightening, and its somewhat chemical odor can raise questions. In recent years, they have been decried for a long time, but are now back in the spotlight with more neutral formulations that are even suitable for sensitive skin. Long live soft legs!

Electric epilators

Practical, it can also be frightening, as it is reputed to be painful. The electric epilator pulls out the hair from the root! It's guaranteed to keep skin looking its best for days on end. Of course, over the last few years, the market has made sure to create epilators that are less and less painful and more and more effective. With interchangeable heads and adjustable intensities, brands are vying with each other to offer the very best! Easy to slip into your bag, it can run on charge and be used just about anywhere.

Permanent hair removal

Laser hair removal is, as its name suggests, an irreversible operation. Performed over several sessions in an institute, permanent hair removal is an increasingly popular method for those who no longer wish to be bothered by their hair. Available for underarms, legs, arms and even the bikini line, this hair removal technique uses the power of laser beams to reach the hair bulb and reduce it to nothing. Several sessions are required, depending on the area, skin type and hair type.

Waxing at home: tips for doing it right

Whether for legs, bikini line or underarms. Waxing at home requires a certain amount of application, and above all, it must be done gently.

For the legs

It's certainly the easiest area to wax, and the one we take the least care of! Before each depilation, we make sure to gently but thoroughly exfoliate the legs. Exfoliation eliminates dead skin, making it easier to remove hair and care for it. On the evening before waxing, make sure your skin is well moisturized (although it should be moisturized every day, without exception) to prevent it from being too weakened by the heat of the wax and the rigors of waxing. When using Oriental hot wax, be careful not to wax the same area twice, as this can cause irritation or burns.

But also for the rest of the body

Armpits: to keep them soft and smooth, without irritating them. Make sure the area is well-prepared to avoid the slightest discomfort. The day before, you can moisturize your armpits with a vegetable oil (like coconut oil!) nourished skin will be stronger to withstand waxing, which can be painful under the arms! Of course, you'll want to choose wax strips adapted to this area.

The bikini line: like the armpits, this is a fragile area. But waxing is still the best way to remove hair without fear of its impromptu return in the middle of vacation. Full bikini line, bikini, Brazilian, subway ticket, classic... Bikini waxes come in many shapes and sizes, so they're perfect for every situation! Beware, however, of full bikini waxing, which is increasingly contraindicated by specialists who insist that pubic hair is not there by chance... It protects against infection and the risk of irritation! Oriental wax (soft and warm) is ideal for waxing this fragile area. Before waxing, you should perform a light exfoliation (to remove dead skin and facilitate hair uprooting). Be careful not to do this more than once a month.

Shaving at home: how to make the results last?

For long-lasting results, shaving is clearly not the most popular method. In fact, it generally has to be repeated every two days (if not sooner, as everyone's hair is different). However, you can cheat a little and make your shave last a little longer. To do this, use the right tips:

  • Shave in the direction of the hair: contrary to what you might think, and especially contrary to what is generally done, we shave in the direction of hair growth! Not the other way round. This method prevents irritation and, above all, ingrown hairs.
  • Check the condition of your blades: for optimal efficiency, make sure your blades are sharp! A dull blade can be dangerous.
  • Never shave dry: it's a mistake we've all made... and one we've probably regretted! Dry shaving inevitably causes significant skin irritation and can also lead to cuts of varying degrees of pain. Shave with a shaving gel or oil specially designed for the purpose. Some even slow down hair regrowth.
  • Moisturize your legs: before, after, all the time! Moisturizing your legs is definitely not something to neglect, winter or summer.
  • Carefully shave bony areas: always be very careful around the knees and ankles, as this is where the razor can most often injure us.
