Complete guide to caring for curly hair

Complete guide to caring for curly hair

Coralie Techer

Naturally curly hair requires an adapted care routine and precise gestures to shine to its full potential. Focus on the complete guide to hair care.

Hair curl is mainly attributed to the structure of the hair shaft and the shape of the hair follicles. When hair follicles have an oval or asymmetrical shape, the hair naturally curves as it grows. This curvature results in tight curls, giving hair its curly appearance. Curly hair needs special care, as it tends to be more prone to frizz, dryness and breakage. Appropriate styling techniques and products can help maintain moisture and control curl.

What's the difference between curly and frizzy hair?

The difference is slight, because in common parlance the term "curly hair" is often used to cover the whole range of curly hair, when it should be the other way round. Curl is a kind of curl! Because there are different types of curly hair, classified according to the curl pattern classification popularized by hairstylist Andre Walker. Curly hair types range from 2A to 4C, from loose curls to very tight curls (considered curly) and frizzy.

The characteristic difference between curly and frizzy hair lies mainly in the shape and size of the curls.

Curly locks: Curly hair has tighter, narrower curls. These curls can be spiral or zigzag-shaped, and are often smaller in diameter. Curly hair tends to form very tight curls throughout.

Curly locks: Curly hair, on the other hand, has wider, fuller curls. These curls can resemble gentle waves or looser curls. Curly hair can have a texture that is less tight than curly hair, but more pronounced than wavy hair.

It's important to note that the classification of hair as curly, frizzy or wavy is not set in stone, and that there is a wide variety of hair textures that can fall between these categories. Each individual's hair is unique, and there may be different combinations of textures on the same head, so the most effective approach is to consult a professional for personalized advice and the best way to adapt your routine!

Care essentials for curly hair

Maintaining curly hair requires specific care to maintain moisture, minimize frizz and prevent breakage. Here are a few tips for caring for your curly locks:

Maintaining hydration

Curly hair tends to be drier, as the scalp's natural oils have difficulty reaching the ends due to tight curls. Use moisturizing hair products such as sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners or natural, homemade care products to avoid drying out your hair. Importantly, use deep moisturizing hair masks regularly to restore hydration.

Switch to co-wash

Co-wash, which involves washing hair with a conditioning conditioner without using shampoo, can be beneficial for curly hair, as it preserves hair's natural moisture while lightly cleansing strands and scalp.

Avoid aggressive products

Avoid hair products containing sulfates, silicones and drying alcohols, as they can aggravate dryness and frizz.

Always detangle gently

Use a wide-tooth comb or, preferably, your fingers to gently detangle your hair when it's damp and soaked with hair care products. Start with the ends and gradually work your way up to the roots to prevent breakage.

S'appliquer au coiffage

Avoid brushing or combing dry hair, as this can cause frizz and destroy curl definition. Use your fingers to style and define your curls when your hair is damp, or use a wide-tooth comb if necessary.

Apply as it dries

Avoid using rough cotton towels to dry your hair, as they can cause frizz. Instead, use a microfiber towel or soft cotton T-shirt to absorb excess water by gently patting your hair. You can also let your hair air-dry as much as possible.

Choosing the right styling products

Use styling products adapted to curly hair, such as gels, styling creams, hair serums, or mousses specifically designed to define and maintain curls. Apply products evenly to damp hair for better curl definition.

Protect your hair at night

Wrap your hair in a satin scarf or use a satin pillowcase to avoid friction that could cause frizz and damage.

Cut regularly

To avoid split ends and breakage, have your hair cut regularly by a hairdresser who knows curly hair well.
