Eyebrow transplants: the solution for structured eyes

Eyebrow transplants: the solution for structured eyes

Coralie Techer

Due to a particular disease or genetic condition, eyebrows can be missing. There is a medical and surgical solution to this problem: eyebrow transplantation.

There's a lot of talk about restructuring eyebrows through permanent make-up or non-invasive operations such as microblading, microshading or browlift. These techniques are good for thickening eyebrows that are too thin (due to excessive plucking, for example), restoring shape to a line that's too sparse, or even outright creating eyebrows for people suffering from alopecia. It's a fact that, whether caused by disease or genetic predisposition, the lack of hair and therefore of eyebrows can be a handicap for sufferers. While eyebrows play a major role in facial harmony, they also have a protective function for our eyes, shielding them from external aggressors (UVB, dust, sweat, pollution).

Why have an eyebrow transplant?

In extreme cases, eyebrow grafting remains a sure-fire way of restoring a structured, permanent line! But it can also be a surgical means of repairing an eyebrow arch damaged as a result of an accident or malformation. In all cases, this is a rather extensive aesthetic medical operation requiring pre- and post-operative follow-up. All conditions must be met and verified with a specialized physician before the operation can proceed. Eyebrow transplants are similar to hair transplants, which are performed on the skull to restore a mane of wild hair.

Hair follicle grafts are extracted from the scalp and transposed to the brow bone. It then depends on the individual's desire and need to reconstruct the entire eyebrow or to fill in only certain areas.

How much does a transplant cost ? It all depends on the desired result and each person's needs. The price is usually obtained on the basis of an estimate, but you should expect to pay about

What are the different stages of an eyebrow transplant?

To better understand the eyebrow grafting process, it's important to break down the steps involved.

Preparing with the doctor

As with all surgical procedures, eyebrow grafting requires a preliminary consultation with the specialist in charge of the operation. This consultation not only defines the area where the hair follicles will be harvested for the graft, but also establishes the aesthetic needs and desires (size, thickness, straight, arched) that will lead to a successful graft. Consultations can vary depending on the center, clinic and expert chosen.

Graft harvesting

Very often, implants are extracted directly from the skull. A discreet area is chosen, such as the back of the head under the hair, to extract the hair follicles (between 100 and 400 according to Dr. Bouhanna's expertise) that will supply the new eyebrows, without aesthetic discomfort. Double or single follicles are chosen to fill the brow bone, and the doctor extracts them under local anaesthetic, using a micro-device.

Graft implantation

Once the grafts have been extracted from the chosen area, they must be implanted in the brow bone to reconstruct the eyebrows as desired! This is a meticulous procedure, also performed under local anaesthetic. Each follicle is implanted one by one, to achieve the desired line and thickness. The specialist uses an ultra-fine device to implant the hair with the utmost precision, for a natural, clean and precise look.

What happens after the transplant?

After the operation, there are a few rules to follow to maximize healing and allow the graft to take hold. As stipulated by the Maison Lutétia beauty salon, in the month following the operation, you should :

  • Avoid applying make-up to the eyebrows. Let the area breathe as much as possible, and avoid applying irritating products while it's still healing.
  • Be careful to even out the eyebrows with scissors, as the new hairs grow quickly. With the reflexes of a hair growing twice as fast as the eyebrow hairs, the graft will grow about one cm per month.
  • Accustom the grafts to the desired eyebrow line by regularly styling them in the direction of regrowth and brushing them with a shaping gel for a harmonious shape.

How do I maintain my eyebrow graft on a daily basis?

All you need to do is apply the right techniques and, above all, give the skin time to heal properly. It's important to remember that there's nothing innocuous about a transplant. Even if the body receives grafts that are familiar to it, since the hair is extracted from the head, there is always a risk of rejection. Post-operative follow-up is therefore essential! Once the first few months have passed, there's not much to monitor, and life can go on as if nothing had happened... Or almost: to keep your eyebrows in tip-top shape, you can take care of them with the help of an eyebrow serum , for example.
