Trend - How to lighten your eyebrows?

Trend - How to lighten your eyebrows?

Coralie Techer

Eyebrows are all about fashion! Sometimes ultra-thin, sometimes bushy... Lately, we've been loving them lightened or even bleached. How do you adopt this trend at home? Here's how.

Eyebrows can be a real fashion and beauty statement. Long ignored, today they're an integral part of our style, and it's not unusual for top fashion designers to have fun with them. In recent seasons, models have often sported bleached eyebrows on the catwalk. This is known as "bleach brow", an extreme technique that differs slightly from lightening.

Why lighten your eyebrows?

Lightening your eyebrows can soften overly dark brows, and thus an overly assertive look. When hair color changes, from jet black to warm brown for example, black eyebrows can stand out. To bring harmony back to your face, it's best to lighten them by one or two shades, so that the result remains natural. In more extreme cases, you can go as far as bleaching. To keep up with trends, for example, or simply to assert your style! Back in 2013, pioneering personalities such as Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevigne and Lady Gaga tried it. Since then, Kim Kardashian and her half-sister Kendall Jenner have gone for it too! This trend is hovering over the beauty sphere, and 2023 could well be its moment. Will you be tempted?

The difference between lightening and bleaching eyebrows

One is to correct an aesthetic aspect, the other is to assert one's style. Eyebrow lightening is not to be confused with eyebrow bleaching, which is much more extreme. In fact, eyebrow bleaching consists (exactly as for hair) in lightening the hair up to 8 shades below! This is not a permanent technique, and the natural color of the hair usually returns after one or two months. This is a delicate technique, since bleaching requires the use of products that can be harmful to the eyes. It is therefore strongly recommended to have it done in a beauty salon by a professional.

How to lighten eyebrows naturally?

Have you changed hair color and now your eyebrows look too dark? To soften this demarcation, you can resort to eyebrow lightening... naturally! There are several homemade recipes to achieve the desired result:

Lemon juice

Well-known for lightening hair, lemon juice also works well for lightening eyebrows by one or two shades. Note that this method is more effective in summer, as the sun accelerates the lemon's bleaching effect on hair. Mix a dose of lemon with an equal dose of water in a small container, dip a cotton bud in it and brush it over your eyebrows. Lemon is very irritating to the eye, so be careful not to let the juice come into direct contact with your eye. Leave on for around 30 minutes, then rinse off with clear, lukewarm water, using a glove to avoid getting lemon in your eye.

Apple cider vinegar

As with lemon, mix a dose of apple vinegar with an equal dose of water. Soak a cotton bud or cotton pad in the vinegar and dab onto eyebrow hairs. Leave on for a maximum of 20 minutes, as prolonged exposure of the vinegar to the skin could lead to irritation.

Chamomile

This plant is definitely multi-purpose! Infused chamomile is excellent for lightening eyebrows. Note that it's not the infused water that's used here, but the dried chamomile flowers softened by the boiling water. Once the flowers have softened, you can make a paste and apply it to the eyebrows (make sure the preparation cools before applying to the skin). You'll need to wait around two hours under cellophane to see a satisfactory result.

Lighten eyebrows with special products

That's another possibility. Lightening eyebrows has become a real business for the beauty industry, so it's not uncommon to find ready-made kits for thinning hair at home. If you choose to proceed in this way, be sure to follow the instructions to the letter to avoid any accidents. Bleaching products can be dangerous if used incorrectly. To make sure you don't make a mistake, it's best to call in a professional from a beauty salon. Together, you can define the desired tone, style and even choose to color your eyebrows differently.

The ephemeral technique of make-up

If you're hesitant or don't yet dare to take the plunge into chemical thinning, you can always turn to the eyebrow make-up solution! This much more ephemeral technique can, however, do the trick for a special occasion, while you're waiting for your salon appointment, or to brighten up a botched eyebrow tint. There are several solutions to this problem:

Make-up with eyebrow gel

Not all eyebrow gels are transparent. Some, in addition to setting hairs for a browlift effect, can also color them! For a brighter look, choose a gel whose color is one or two shades below your natural color.

Le maquillage avec le crayon à sourcils

This is probably the most popular technique, plus eyebrow pencils are easy to handle! As with brow gel, choose a pencil one to two shades lighter than your original color. You can also play on the trend by choosing a much lighter color!

Make-up with concealer

With this technique, it's all or nothing! You can apply a very light dose of concealer or even foundation to your eyebrows to lighten them. If you want to play it up a bit, you can even blend your eyebrows by overdoing the concealer or foundation. To play up the contrast with your eyebrows, you can go all out on your lashes with ultra-intense mascara and a special lash growth serum for XXL lashes!

Of course, all these techniques don't exclude taking good care of your eyebrows! Even if they've been lightened or bleached, think of eyebrow serum to keep them strong, shiny and full!
